Great shave at the Barbershop!

Had a great shave this morning at the barbershop. very close and comfortable. He used a cheap, one blade disposable razor.........but the prep was outstanding.....he used Lucky Tiger vanishing cream as a prep.....lathered, then covered with hot towels twice.....one pass.....then topped it of with Osage Rub. All I can saw is that it was the best barbershop shave I have ever experienced!

I just had my second shave at a barber shop last weekend. The first was adequate, but the second was less than desirable. I've had better shaves from a cartridge razor. Lots of weepers, rough spots, missed spots and razor burn. The prep was rushed and she was very hesitant with the straight razor, only one pass with the grain. I need to try somewhere else for a comparison, because my set up at home provides a much closer and enjoyable experience.

To be honest I was scared when I got a straight edge shave at my barbershop. It is the only one I have ever had, but it was amazing. Took him twice as long to prep my face than it did to shave me.

It was so comfortable I almost fell asleep in the chair after I got over having a sharp blade gliding over my neck.

I didn't have to shave again for like 3 days after that. It was that perfect.

My barbershop charges too much for shaves because in the time it takes to shave one person he can cut two or three peoples hair, so the only people who get it done are the older men who want a blast of nostalgia.

There's something about a good barbershop shave. I just think that most of the new barbers don't know how to give a really good one. That and the fact that a barber shave is quite costly. :thumbdown

That first part, about the barbers not being very good at it, speaks for itself. The second part is IMHO. :001_rolle :w00t:

When I left Barcelona and went to a small village, one of the best things that surprised me was there were two old barbershops here, both of them working full time. Somehow men of all ages still go to the barbershop, while women attend their unisex (ha!) salons.

So every once in a while I like to stop by, have a chat, buy the occasional bottle of myrsol and have a really great shave.

Man, I should have quit the big city so long ago. :001_rolle

Yesterday morning I had my first barber shop shave on the way into the office, and I waited a day to post my impression, just to let everything settle.

I wasn't exactly sure what I was in for, because the shop charges only $10 for a shave. Well, you get what you pay for: no towels and no prep. On went the warm thin lather, and he started slicing away at my face with a shavette (real razors are prohibited in my state). Either the disposable blade was not very forgiving, or he was using too much pressure, or my face just wasn't ready, but it was not a comfortable experience. When he re-lathered and went at the second pass, it was even worse. :w00t:

When it was over, he wiped me down, blotted with some aftershave, and sent me away with a paper towel to sop up the wounds. He said I should have warned him that I have tender skin. I think he should always assume that.

:thumbdown My face was sore for the rest of the day. Now I'll admit that some spots were smoother than normal, but many were not. And as the stubble grew back in, it was discomfiting, because it wasn't in the spots where I'm used to it. By evening I still had redness and spots. Fortunately, I healed well enough over night so that I could shave myself this morning. My face just didn't feel normal until I got to shave it again for myself.

There is another barbershop in town, but if I ever go through this again, I'll definitely inquire ahead of time about the prep, equipment, and manner of the barber.

My conclusion is that nobody knows your face as well as you do.

In retrospect, a couple questions:
Would more prep make it a better experience, even with the same equipment?
Would a regular straight be more forgiving than that shavette was?

Alan, that sounds awful. Shake the talc of that barber from your sandals, and go there no more. I suspect that better prep and a real straight would indeed make a difference, but the real problem was operator error.

For Alan and for everyone on this thread, the poll at http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?p=2183308 is still active. I won't claim that it's scientific, but I like the data-gathering aspect of it.

I had my first barbershop shave today and treated my son to one as well. All in all, I wasn't impressed with the result. I enjoyed the pampering but I do a lot better with a DE. The experience was worth the ten bucks but the shave wasn't.

Trying to find the best barbershop shave could get quite expensive.
