Got a permit for the Smith River in Montana

My son and I got permits to float the Smith River in Montana. It is the only permit controlled river in the state because of its remarkable beauty and good fishing. He is a senior in high school, so this will be a father/son trip (with others along) to celebrate his 18th birthday and lock in a memory before he leaves. He is "interested in smoking a cigar." We'll see how that goes as he indoctrinated into rafting culture.

Defeated by my mouse, I put this on the wrong forum. However, I do have a black bear tag, a Glock 20 SF, and a .300 WinMag. I hope I shoot better than I click.

Enjoy your trip with your son, and catch some nice fish, I envy you!! It was just so easy to make a lil' joke...What are you using for the black Bear?? Is the .300 enough??

Should you decide to indeed shoot fish and/or rafts, let me know and I will move this back into the firearms subforum. For now, I will zap it over to the Great Outdoors. :thumbup1:

That sounds great. If it's a thrilling rafting trip he may have trouble keeping that cigar lit. If you want to do some fish shooting Virginia does have a carp season, really, they do.

We will be using fly tackle. The Smith is considered a Red Ribbon river here, as opposed the to Madison or the Big Horn, which have Blue Ribbon status. I'm old enough to remember the 18 year old drinking law and will invoke it on evenings on this trip. That, plus a cigar, will bring him down to earth. I will be spring black bear season and the river corridor is thick with them. I'm not going on the float to hunt, but they should stay out of our camp. The river contains primarily browns and rainbows, the remnants of the days when rivers where stocked in Montana. We are going in April, so snow is a strong probability. These are hard permits to get, so I am thrilled to be sending Back East to college with this fresh on his mind.
