Gold Tuckaway with G in D

I have a gold/brass Tuckaway 1927/28 in good condition (no handle cracks etc) which I've been using for some time. I am about to ebay it but noticed that it has a "G" inside a "D" on the plate which I understand means that it has been returned to Gillette at some time for repair under warranty. Does this make it unusual and add to the value, or is this a commonplace item.
Any information is appreciated.

I think they've debunked that the G & D meant it was sent to the factory for repair, but that it means it was imported or exported from some where. I'm not definitely not 100% on this but I thought I read it in some recent post about a bulldog. Someone like Porter will chime in I'm sure with much better and accurate info.

I wish I could find all the places that are repeating this misinformation to correct it... No, the G-inside-D mark is definitely not a repair mark. The people saying that may be confusing it with the L-series repair serial numbering Gillette did during the early years. We've pretty much nailed down the G-inside-D mark to being an import requirement for plated items coming into France. See this recent thread for more info. It's possible that other European countries had similar requirements, so we can't necessarily say it was specific just to France yet.

Gold examples with this mark seem to be much less common -- personally, I'd only seen silver examples until very recently -- so that would probably add some amount of extra value to a someone who was interested in the historical niche that it represents. But I'd be surprised if it were a very large premium.

I told you Porter would come through:thumbup: The first place I came across the G&D stamp was on a post was on the art of manliness community board where someone was trying to sell a silver Tuckaway for 400-500 because it had the stamp on it. He has it posted on multiple sites for slave still. ( wonder why?). I know I'm not the only one to come across his item. I had someone contact me about buying a razor and the picture they sent was from his listing. The seller wanted a ridiculous amount because it was "rare". I don't own that one thank goodness.

It's funny -- for certain quantities of "funny" that include "sad" and "depressing" -- that I knew exactly who the seller was going to be even before I clicked over there.
