Going to College

It's very likely that next year I'll be going away to college. In light of this, an interesting question comes to mind that I think you guys will have fun with. If you can only take enough grooming products (shaving gear, shampoo, soap, ect.) to fit in a Dopp kit, what would you bring? Also, when I say Dopp kit, I mean of average size, not a suitcase to fill with every soap and cream in your den.

I'm in college now, but am lucky enough to have an apartment, and the largest bathroom IN said apartment. That said, my traveling kit contains:

Travel Tech
Rooney 3/1 Super
Tabac SS
Harris Marlborough AS
Tommy Bahama by Tommy Bahama EdT
Tabac EdC (decanted from 300mL bottle)

Now, that's traveling from home to a destination. If I was going to college and could only bring a kit's worth of gear... it'd be:

#15, and #66
Rooney 3/1 Super, and Rooney Stubby 1 LE
Tabac SS, Irisch Moos SS
Harris Marlborough AS, and Harris Arlington AS
Harris Arlington ASB, T&H 1805 ASB
Tommy Bahama by Tommy Bahama EdT
Tabac EdC (decanted)

Then, when I arrived and settled in my dorm/apartment... I'd go to Walgreens and buy:

Aqua Velva
Skin Bracer
Pinaud Clubman
Pinaud Bay Rum
Nivea Sensitive ASB

I think I could live out of that kit for a semester. Probably less, but I chose my favorite things to bring from home, then picked up some supplementary items to be left at school.

let's see when i was in grad school i had:

parker razor
wilkson sword blades
col conk bay rum soap
aqua velva aftershave

although rutgers grad dorms weren't the greatest.

Hmmm

I would bring:

1- Merkur Barber Pole Slant Bar Razor
1- Merkur Barber Pole Open Comb Razor
20 - Blades (10 Astra, 10 Red Pack Personna)
1 - Small Badger Hair Brush
2 - Tubes WARS Shaving Cream
1 -Clubman After Shave
1- Clubman Hair Tonic
1- Clubman Talc

This assumes that I can snag a lathering cup "elsewhere", and by that I do not mean a long term off site storage of a cafeteria coffee cup.

Whatever you bring invest in a hot water kettle. We had a discussion about this on this thread here.

Bring what you like and don't skimp out, i.e don't downgrade you shaving experience. Leave things at home as well, this will give you one less thing to pack when going home. If you roommate looks at you funny, o well. He doesn't know what he is missing. This also gives you a chance to convert him too with out even say too much. He will start asking you questions. :thumbup1:

hard choice, but i think i'd have to op for my dr.harris marlborough shave stick

I'd actually go as minimalist as I could, which would be my Gilette Tech, a few packs of Walmart Personnas, a decent boar brush, and a couple of pucks Van der Hagen Deluxe melted into shave sticks. Take an after shave of your choice if you like; I'd just take drug store witch hazel. I'd leave anything fancier at home until you get to know your roomie and the bathroom conditions you'll face.

1st I would take stuff that I could live without if lost stolen or broken. Well at least until you get aclimated to your new life. I would want to take things that would stand being dropped or bounced around a bit. If you have things in glass bottles and wanted to take them I would think about putting them in plastic bottles you can find in places like Walmart. I have only one razor, soap/cream, and brush in the dop kit. I would have an alum block and steptic in there as well, with some witch hazel. Keep the AS and the extra stuff in your room and don't carry it back and forth to the shower.

I would probably take no more than two razors and two creams (soap) and 1 or 2 AS, a block of alum, and some witch hazel. Last but not least I don't think I would be without a scuttle, but that's just me.

A stand to put in your room to dry your brush. I don't think I would want to keep a nice brush in a dop kit for a semester.....

bring your favourites of everything. Thy can live in your room, or at least not sitting on the bathroom counter so you dont need to worry about that. Why not use your favourite products?

I completely agree with this. I'm in grad school now but when I was in undergrad and living in the dorm taking a shower and shaving was about the only time you have to yourself. Enjoy your shaves. Take whatever you want.

I agree with aodenkou, you want to keep your best items safe until you know everything is going to work out. When I deploy again I will take my Merkur razor because it is easy to replace and leave my SS and slim here where it is safe.:thumbup1:

I sure wouldn't leave home without the alum, it's become a necessity in my opinion. When I was living in the dorm, I'd usually just shave when i went home on the weekend, and not shave during the week. Once I moved into an apartment, my shaving became a little more regular. I even got one of those things you put a can of goo in and it gives you a warm lather (upgrade from a cold lather, but still not a good shave). I'd stick with a product you're familiar with, and could use in a hurry or under less than ideal conditions.

If your college buddies are anything like mine, they won't know what the heck to do with ANY of that stuff, so it should be fairly safe from pilferage.
