Glycerin Melt and Pour Shaving Soaps

Does/has anyone used a glycerin melt-and-pour soap that they feel performs as well as a top tallow or non melt-and-pour veggie soap? I never have but I'm all ears...

The only soap that has come close to the performance of my QCS creams (tallow) is Van Der Hagen Deluxe (glycerin).

I prefer the VDH Luxury over the Deluxe or Select ones, both for scent and a bit better on performance. I keep a puck of it in the rotation with the cella and tabac and such.

That's interesting. I think the VDH Luxury doesn't create as nice of a lather as the Deluxe, and it smells like deodorant!

Which all really demonstrates why VDH has the various different soaps still in it's line, I'd say. lol

The nice part about them is they are cheap, so trying a puck of each type would cost like you a grand total of what... $15, max?

Exactly! There is a lot of support on here for both the Deluxe and the Luxury. I'm just happy that there is an American company that makes something of high quality that is also inexpensive and easily available.

I've had some that were pretty close, but for the most part none of them can touch Tabac or DR Harris.

My experience is limited, but I found Honeybee to be very slick and lubricating. Now that I've been using a couple tallow soaps I'm finding that I get fewer nicks with them. In retrospect I've concluded that the Honeybee provided less protection. Has anyone else found less protection from melt and pour?

I have been having fun with "uberlather". I add liquid glycerine and VDH Deluxe to different scented shave creams. (Proraso, TOBS Coconut, C&E Sienna, Taconic Mint and Eucalyptus just to name a few) They all shave fantastic and it is easy to change the variety of scent and still maintain a consistent shave quality.

I've only used it twice, but so far I am quite surprised by Ogallala Bay Rum soap. It's a much, much drier lather than my Harris or GFT soap and is best applied with painting strokes rather than my usual circular strokes, but the protection and shaves have been excellent. I thought the first shave might have been a fluke, but the second one today was just as good. It also seems to have a slight warming effect when first applied similar to the aftershave. I plan on discontinuing my rotation of other soaps for a couple of weeks to see if the good results continue.

I think there are glycerin and non tallow soaps that are as good as a tallow soap. I don't know if any of those are ever melt and pour.

Try a little more water when loading your brush, a few swirls in a tablespoon or two of water after loading should thin out your Ogallala so you can use your usual application method.
