Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban

Bought a bottle of this last nite. Wasn't in the mood for beer or whine. Plus, it is the fall season, so what the hell. I circled the liquor store about 5 times contemplating whether to get the more expensive (but in my mind endlessly superior) Lagavulin 16, or Lagavulin Distillers Edition 1991.

The Quinta Ruban was on sale, so I had to go that way. Never had a highland before. Not the best dram, nor the worst. Quite aggresive tasting, not unlike a young Speyside.

Drank more than I should have...but I don't know what it is about Single Malts. I never get a hangover. Perhaps it is because I sip it, and GUZZLE everything else. Good for me I guess!

Not much of a review, just stream of consciousness.

I heard the Glenmorangie has recently been purchased by a different company. This "Quinta Ruban" is thus a new version of what was once referred to as the Glenmorangie "Port Cask".

Nor do I. I believe it is because in the distilling process the first third of the distillate is discarded, this is repeated in the second distillation process. That way all the nasty poisons are disposed of.

My neighbour home distils and he follows the same process of discarding the first part that runs off for the same reasons.

The Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban is a favorite of mine, and a regular visitor to my Scotch shelf. :001_smile

I've long been a big fan of sherry monsters and Speysides, but this was (and is) my first experience with port casking and I found I loved the additional sweetness and the undertone of cherries. Amazing fruit on the finish. Just wonderful.

I was a fan of the Port Wood, and I've read the QR wasn't as good. But I tried it last weekend and wasn't disappointed at all.

It's now on my wishlist.

Last time I was looking for a change of pace single malt I picked up the Glenmorangie Lasanta. Sherry finished and a very nice change of pace from my usual Peat bomb islay. I think I prefer the Lasanta to QR

Also, with that last post my status is no longer "wingman to Stan" which is good b/c I was concerned about getting so drunk I didn't remember meeting Stan much less playing wingman for him. Also, in answer to the current status "is reformulated better?" the answer is usually no because all the reformulations I tried just took out the tallow I liked so much

I've been a fan of both the Port Wood and the QR. It has that edge of something that takes away the vanilla I get with Glenmorangie and adds something a bit more exotic.
