Gillette Travel Tech experience

I picked up a few of these over the months with other razor buys but never tried one before today. Put in an NOS Gillette Platinum Plus and..... it was just OK. Mild & requiring multiple passes and even then, not super close. Figured that was it but then I recalled something I read here. So, I loosened up the handle ~1/4 turn and tried that. This transformed it from an OK shaver to an excellent one. That was a real surprise. Any others with a similar experience?

I"ve often told my wife that the hours I spend on B&B are more than simply entertainment!

Congratulations on thinking little loosening trick as you troubleshot shave quality.

The more I use DE's (& SE's like GEM) the more I realize it is about fine tuning to your face between the blade type, razor, & technique. It surely isn't one size fits all. The first time I tried the loosening tweak was yesterday with my new-to-me DR. I swapped out the Gillette Platinum Plus that had been in since Sunday with superb results for a Gillette Red (thin). The results were horrible. Then it dawned on me that the original 3-hole blades were likely much thicker than the Red so I backed off the tension and got back to nearly the shave I had previously with the Platinum Plus. Life is a process that is for certain.

I'm not about to play fast and loose with my Tech's head. If you are looking to increase blade gap and exposure you would be much safer shimming the blade and tightening down the head for a firm setting.

You are probably going to tell me that shaving in the shower by feel is bad too.

I don't disagree though, a shim would be consistent.
