Gillette Toggle

As some of you may know, I am a big fan of adjustable razors. I have lusted over a Gillette Toggle for about a year and have lost out on getting on the bay a number of times. Well, I finally lucked out and picked one up. It arrived yesterday - after I had shaved. So, it had to wait until today for the first shave.

To me it shaves a lot like a FB. I set the razor for 7 on the first pass, upped it to 7+ on the second, and kept it at 8 for the last two passes. Got a very nice, BBS shave. At first it seemed a little awkward holding the razor since I usually rest my pinky on the end of the handle. However, it became second nature almost immediately. I used a Personna Med Prep blade for its maiden voyage.

Now Mr. Toggle can join his brothers and cousins.

Of all the adjustables, however, I still rate my Mergresses as the best.

That's a sweet stable of steel ack.

Out of ignorance, can I assume that the toggle equates to the usual 'quarter turn to lock' action?

The toggle is hinged. So when it's open it the bottom is L shaped. You lock it by putting it in an I shape. To turn the settings it should be totally open.

Congratulations on finally getting one you've been chasing. That's a great feeling. Now, if your town wasn't overrun this week by politicians you could head on down to Ceviches to celebrate :biggrin1: Enjoy it in good health.

Nice Ack, I have 3 cased, my top choice for adjustable razors. I noticed it had =s a slight slant to the left. Did you check it to see if its straight?$Toggle.jpg

Yeaa! In my very beginning days of razor collecting I found two a month apart and thought "hey, this is easy!" Haven't found one since. What I do remember about it was it was too top heavy for me but SO nice to look at. A very unique and beautiful razor to add to any collection. Congrats!

Congrats, Jim-- sweet razor! What's the vintage of your new acquisition? Mine's 1960/F-4, and your post reminded me that I need to work it into my rotation more often. Enjoy!

Congrats!
I remember when I got my first one. It's a nifty razor.
One thing I discovered was that the toggle-flip mechanism can get sticky -- which is where I'm more fond of the fatboy as the adjustable inheritor of the gillette legacy. If you see that it gets regular soaks to clean out the crud, it works just fine.

D-1 which I believe puts in 1958. That's just about the time I was shaving every day! However, I must confess I don't recall seeing that razor back then.

Thanks, Alex. It's fine.
Great, so it was just the camera angle. Im glad, i had 2 Toggles that i straighten out. Also, a few members sent me theirs to straighten out for them, its common among these heavier adjustables. They are sometimes dropped.

Is it hard to do Alex, my spare Fatboy has been dropped and one end is definitely lower than the other, I try and get around this by not tightening it that much, which evens it out a small bit, but I usually don't use it that much because of it.
