Gillette New Question

I have two Gillette New razors. One has longer comb teeth than the other. Except for the length of the teeth, they appear to be identical. Can someone shed some light on the reason for this difference? I assume one may be older than the other and the length of the teeth represent a modification made over time.

Thanks, guys.

Yes, you are correct. The change to the longer comb teeth was a product improvement implemented early in the New's production history.

The vast majority of News that I have seen have been the long-comb variety.

I've never had the opportunity to shave with both styles "side-by-each" to see if there is a perceptible difference in performance or feel.

In my experience, and I am no expert, the longer comb feels more like a regular safety bar on your skin...Both provide awesome shaves!

I think Brad is right but it's hard to tell because of the lack of date codes. The short tooth New is very close to the length of the New Improved comb and the New Deluxe which was only made until 1931. Gillette was going through quite a change in their razor designs in this period primarily in the change from the 3 hole blade to the slot. They were trying to eliminate competition from the other companies whose blades fit Gillette's Old Type and New Improved razors. They probably were trying to be all things to all men. I have the short and long tooth razors in my rotation and while I don't see a great difference between the two I do prefer the long tooth version.

My thanks to all who responded. The knowledge available from the members of this board is quite overwhelming!

I just picked up a new style for my nephew and was surprised to see that the teeth were shorter than the teeth on mine. Both have the bend and the downward curve in the teeth. And even the shorter one looks different from my old style Gillette. This thread put my mind to ease.

I will have to give it a try and so some side by side comparison before passing it on to him :thumbup1:

I will have to say the sort tooth version is a more attractive razor but I can't say if the shave is any different because I only own the long tooth.

That is one of the many reasons I prefer the Old Type to the NEW......the NEW just looks goofy with those long curvy teeth :thumbdown
