What's new

Gillette Diplomat information needed, please

I have an opportunity to buy a cased Diplomat with the Rocket HD I posted about last week as a package deal. The case is in excellent shape inside and out. The seller tells me there is one small spot of plate loss (pics on the way) but everything else is in tip top shape for a full excellent score.

Did these come with a gold plated razor case like the Aristocrat or just a pack of Gillette blades?

What's the going price for these? He's asking $110.

Mike

Mike, the Diplomat came with a blue plastic dispenser of Blue Blades.

If it's in nice shape $110 would be fair. I paid a little more then that for mine but mine looks new but is not nos.

Len,

Thanks, compared to many here I'm new to this and really don't have a feel for it yet. I never intended to have more than one razor at a time, ever.

Ciao, Mike..

The Diplomat did not come in a gold plated case, from what I know. It came in a leather case with some gold trim and a pattern of golden Fleur-de-Lis embossed in the leather.

The Diplomat and HD combination, together is worth $110, in my opinion. If it's just $110 for a VG Diplomat in a mismatched case, I'd pass on it.

Also.. make sure the razor is indeed a Diplomat and not an Aristocrat, which DID come in a gold plated case on occasion (and typically fetch less than Diplomats). You can tell by the knurling on the handle. On the Diplomat the knurling is along the entire length of the handle, including the pommel.. on the Aristocrat, a portion of the handle or pommel will have a smooth section.

Wisdom,

Thanks for the information about the knurling. I'll check it out. The Diplomat is in a brown leather case with gold trim and the Fleur-de-Lis embossing, I was wondering if it came with the gold razor case like the Aristocrat.

It's not $110 for both though.

Mike, I took your asking about the gold case to mean the little case the razor blades came in.

The Fleur-de-Lis on the inside of the case identifies it as a Diplomat case.

Post some photos when you get the set, if you get the set.

Len,

You had it correct. My post probably wasn't clear which wed to Wisdom's confusion. I did want to know if the Diplomat came with the "little gold case" for the razor blades. Now that I know it didn't, not having one included is not a big deal.

This can either be a great deal or a bust. I'm told the Rocket 500 HD in excellent condition is worth the $125 he origianally wanted (I got him down to $100 because the lid of the case has a crack in it). He wants $110 for the Diplomat for a total deal of $210. I mentioned $200 and asked for pics of the Diplomat showing the small spot of plate loss.

I'll tell you what, I should have been all over the Rocket 500 HD with a case sold here a few weeks ago. That one went for under $100.

I wonder if the seller is a member here?

We'll see what happens.

Update, got the photos of the Diplomat. Knurling all the way to the neck of the handle, so as I understand it, that confirms it's a Diplomat not an Aristocrat. Next the spot of plate loss. It's on the handle about 1/3 of the way down from the head about the size of the head of a finishing nail. Not too bad. The rest is gorgeous. I'm just worried about these gold plated razors, it doesn't take much to loss the plating.

Well it's time to make up my mind, go for the deal at $210 or try and separate the two.
