Gillette 7 O'Clocks felt like sandpaper

I had my first experience with the Gillette 7 O'Clock super platinum blades tonight. I was getting ready to take SWMBO out for dinner, loaded up a fresh blade on my DE89 and oh boy was it rough. I guess these just don't jive with my beard, glad I got the Feathers while I was out today. I definitely couldn't go ATG on the 3rd pass so I ended up making 2 XTG passes.

Anyone have good experiences with these blades? Or do they work better with different safety razors?

Really? I just tried the Blue and Yellow as part of the Australian Travelling Box and found both gave quite comfortable and very close shaves when loaded in my slim. The Yellows are juuuuuust a little sharper IMHO but, for the price, I'd take these over Astras or Feathers (don't get me wrong, I LOVE my feathers - first 100 blade purchase - but I really need to concentrate to avoid any irritation and damn it, I'll take comfort and a relaxing shave over a "test" any day).

I don't like the Blues (pictured above). However the Permasharp Greens and Blacks from India are smooth as silk.

Maybe your lather was too thick?
You know, I didn't think about that. Now that you mention it, it was a bit thicker than normal. I was using a soap with a boar brush. I possibly didn't put enough water. I'll give them another shot.

i love yellows and blacks and may someday try a blue. I highly recommend trying the Rapira Platinum Lux if you are into this type of blade.. if you can find them. I used one today and it was perfection and similar to a black.

Definitely try again. I've written off a blade because of one or two terrible shaves, come back to it later and had a great shave. So much of the time for me it comes down to prep or lather or something else. I love the blues and the yellows.

I've been doing some blade testing for the last 6 weeks. I'm testing 12 blades in 8 razors in a kind of round robin. Dark Blues and Thins are part of my test. So far both work well. Still not PolSilvers though..Those are ahead so far. Testing will be complete sometime in March God willing....lol

I'm a avid 7 Oclock Yellow and Feather blade user. I use a Merker 34c HD 90% of the time. I am learning too use a slant.

I have not tried the blue / black, but hear the blacks are a very nice blade.

Where are you finding Feathers locally in LA? I haven't heard of any good shave shops, besides the online vendors' operations

I have not tried the blues, but the blacks work great for me. They are sharp and smooth and last about 4 shaves. When they're new I find them to be very similar in feel to Med Preps.

It might have been a bad blade, but it could be that the blues don't like your razor. I usually use Meds/Labs in my Mergress, but my Slim hates them. The difference is unbelievable.

If there is no improvement with the next blade I suggest you purchase another razor.:001_huh:

I used the greens for the first time last night in my Tech. Gave a great shave but there was a ridiculous amount of glue on one side of the blade. Left a bunch of funk on my razor and spread over the blade when I wiped it with an alcohol swab post shave in hopes of using it again. I hope the rest of the pack isn't like that because I really liked the shave.

Blue Super Platinum are good, but I like the Black Super Platinum better. Feathers don't do it for me, as they are too rough.

I have tried yellows, greens, blues and blacks. I did not have good luck with any of them. The blades I do have good results with Astra SPs and every Personna I have tried. Perhaps there is just enough blade design similarity between each brand that no blade from one brand will work for a particular face?

I get smooth and comfortable shaves with the Blues in my Tradere SB, Merkur Slant and Rocket HD. Interestingly, they don't seem so comfortable in a 1940's Super Speed.
