Gillette 7 O'Clock yellows - I don't agree

Hi guys,

I've been DE shaving for a little over a month now and i've been working through my sample pack of blades. after reading really good things about these blades i thought i'd try them next (a couple of shaves ago)... before i tried these i tried Personna reds, gillette platinum (non swede), Derby, Iridium.

I was looking forward to a nice shave and set to work after a long steamy shower. I was really disappointed, it wasn't comfortable, it wasn't close and i really had to work to get an okay shave. I'd been getting BBS with the iridiums with little effort. I put this down to not enough experience and tried again today.. unfortunately i experienced the same. i'm a little irritated, especially at the corner of my lips and my neck is quite rough still.

I should note i've been using this in my Merkur 38C (HD barber pole).

I guess that these just aren't for me, at lease not in this razor, i'll gladly give them a second chance in my SS or Tech when i get round to trying my whole sample pack in those razors.

For now, i think i'm going to ditch this blade early and try either Astra superior, feather or super platinum (srystal platinum?).... any recomendations as to where to go from here? and any thoughts on the yellows?

Possibly you may have come upon a 'burn' blade. Toss that one out and use a different 7 O'Clock Yellow. If that one treats your face badly, you may want to try the Feathers next. However, if you are getting BBS shaves from the Iridiums w/ little or no effort, why change?

Well if the 7 O'clock had a bite to it, the Feather might be worse. Try it in the Super Speed. I personally never had good luck with the barber pole Merkur and have since ditched it in favor of the HD variants which have worked out very well for me.

The 7'Oclock Yellow produced very nice results in my slant and open comb HD.

I've used Yellows and Iridiums both in my EJ 89L and Superspeed. Have gotten very similar and very nice shaves with both. Have never used an HD, so can't comment on that part of the equation.

Another one of those YMMV things I guess. They seem to get generally good reviews around here, but the Yellows haven't worked out well for me either. I bought two five packs as part of a larger order, and the first two blades both gave me very rough shaves; I'm glad I didn't buy more. Feathers and Astras both work great for me, and Sharks are good too.

I am surprised you got good results from the Iridiums but not from the Yellows. For me, these two blades are quite similar. I alternate between the two pretty frequently. Generally speaking, if someone else put either of the blades in my razor I'd have a very difficult time telling one from the other.

I suppose this is just another one of those YMMV situations.

Paul --

Set the Yellows aside and revisit them in six months. You'll probably be surprised.

Yup, the most comfortable DE shaves so far have been with the iridium, it feels like there's no blade in the razor.

Will do, one thing for sure is i'm going to bin this blade early. maybe i'll have better luck with the yellows in my SS, i'll go through the rest of my sample pack in my merkur first though (although i did touch up today's shave with the SS and an iridium, i just didn't want to irritate my face any more)
