Getting the base off a Naniwa?

Does anyone know how easy/hard it is to remove the plastic base from a Naniwa stone? I ask because the cheapest supplier for a 12k I can find in UK/EU only has them with the base - it would cost £10 extra to get a 20mm stone without base from another supplier.

My existing Naniwa stones don't have bases, and I want to be able to use my stone holder consistently.

I have read some posts regarding people trying to do that with not such great results. I feel the same way about my chosera 1k. but at risk of ruining the stone. I like my stone holders also, and I also like the ability to use the side of my choseras on warped blades.

The epoxy is very strong. You are most likely to break the stone or at least have divots where the glue pulled some of the stone with it.
I recently tried to get a 1k loose from the base after I had used most of the stone up anyway and I found out just how good the glue spots hold it down.

Most epoxy and glue breaks down with heat. Of course, it could be that the binder of the stone does also so that might just cause an enormous mess.

I say go for the extra 10 pounds. Amortize that over the number of warped blades you'll have to hone and it probably comes to a couple of pence/blade.

There. My enabling for the day is finished.

Thanks folks, it doesn't sound feasible to get the base off - and it sounds well worth paying £10 for someone to not stick it on in the first place!
