Getting a Straight Edge restored...

I stopped off at an Antique shop while heading down to the VA Hospital and saw a straight edge that looked decent. It needs a new scale and the blade needs work.

Being new to this, who do I need to discuss this with so that I can get it restored? I understand this isn't a free service and thats all good to me. I just need to find out who to discuss this with so that I can get a deal worked out. I want to try straight edge shaving.

I will post some pictures up shortly. After I get them taken. It needs a massive overhaul.

I am just updating this since its been restored in Amboyna Burl. Thank you for the PM's in getting the right restorer for my first Straight Edge. I have seen 6 different pictures of what it looks like and I will post my own pictures as soon as the blade comes back home.

I expect to see it by next week. I'm pretty stoked about trying this out before New Years. :w00t:

Borrowing the pictures sent to me till I get the blade and take my own. Which I will edit this post then to replace them.

That did clean up super nice!! I have been looking around at straights and at some point would like to learn to restore but at the moment time does not permit. I do however pop into various antique shops from time to time and have been keeping an eye out for that straight that catches my eye. In essence, I too would like to know who did the restore!

I was recommended to this guy named Max. This is the website I had to use to pay for the service.

I was given an old email he doesn't use any more so at first I didn't know if I could get him to restore it. I finally got an email from him and we went from there. He was recommended highly and as you can see, his work looks fantastic.

I was so happy to hear from him today that it had been completed. I wrote him so he knows I am borrowing the pictures he took and will replace them with my own.

Thats def Max's work. Wonderful work at good prices. A full blade restroation, rescale in horn, and hone job ran me 135.

Doesnt make sense to buy a new blade with a guy like Max. Just watch the back for something with broken scales for 10-20 bucks, and send her away. Its a semi custom for the same as a plain jane TI. Just my 2 cents.

One thing I really enjoyed was that he showed me links to some cheap Amboyna Burl and a link to really good quality so I could see the difference between then. I live my life by quality within reason rather than crap.

Hopefully this bad boy with be in next week. It will join the custom badger brush I had made in Amboyna Burl as well. But yeah, his prices wasn't bad at all. My cost was close to yours JonnyAngel.

I am thinking of getting a couple more restored by Max. One wood that has really caught my eye is the following:

The Buckeye Burl is just breath taking to me. But at the time of commission, I couldn't afford it. I was set on the Amboyna Burl but I know next year I will get one done in the Buckeye Burl. A straight edge and a shaving brush match. :w00t:

My god that is a dead sexy razor. I must say it is a big improvement from the last time I saw it. Next time you come to visit, you better bring that with you my friend .

Of course I will bring it down to show it off. Especially with the custom made Amboyna Finest Badger knot that is 24mm. These two will pair up nicely together when I travel over seas on my next trip. :w00t:

It made it in today and the pictures doesn't do Max's work justice. Holy cow!!! I've been putting off shaving today so I am gonna try my first straight edge by my own hand. Pray for me on this new adventure of shaving.

So its clear, I've paid to have them done a couple of times. But this is crazy to try with my own hand. :w00t:

Here is me with the Amboyna Burl Scales on my JA Henckels 401 Platinum and my custom made Amboyna Burl 24mm Finest Badger Knot. After my first attempt at a Straight Edge Shave. I had a lot of fun and didn't cut my self at all. Still need plenty of work on using it but running my hand down my face I get a nice smooth feeling. Running the hand up its a different story. A great experience and plenty of time to learn. :w00t:

Gorgeous work:w00t:

Have one from Max, but not this spectacular.

Sverre

PS! Looks like the shave is coming along nicely even though you missed a bit under the nose and mouth:wink2:
