Georgetown G5 Scuttle Owners

Hello I am looking at a G5 and wanted to get feedback & tips from G5 owners.
I know that Moss & Dirty's retain heat longer but this thread isn't about that. I just want feedback and tips from G5 owners.

Thanks in Advance,

Jesse

Not much to tell you. You can preheat the thing with hot water and then fill with boiling water but it still doesn't keep the lather hot very long. You use all these warming devices people use but in the end you can try and compensate for a poor design only so much. Better to just a buy a superior product to begin with.

Thanks for the reply. When you say not long? How long was that? Do you still have it and use it? Thanks again BigSpendUr.

I'm curious too, because my wife is considering getting me a scuttle, and I don't want one that doesn't retain heat well. I have seen any reviews of the new G5, only the older ones. Thanks

The G5 is awesome. I use it on the weekend. I've had no issues with heat retention. I fill both the inner and outer bowls with boiling water from a travel coffee maker I store in my vanity. I let the bowl sit like that while I prep my shave, pour out the water from the outer bowl and make my lather.

You'll love it.

BTrack, Thanks so much!! I appreciate your feedback greatly!

Is there anyone else that wants to share their love or experience with the G5?

I've used a G5 for most of the past year. I have no complaints about it retaining heat. The heat starts to trail off after the first two passes, but by then you don't really notice. I fill the inner and outer bowls with water, then put it unplugged in the microwave for 2.5 minutes. The water is hot, but not boiling. I keep a paper plate under it when I move it from kitchen to bath because the bowl does get hot. I then plug the inner chamber and soak my brush in the outer bowl. When I'm ready to make the lather, I empty the outer bowl. Having the inner chamber plugged when I empty the outer bowl is why I like the G5. I find the lather does dry out quicker than lather in a regular bowl, but I add a little water to it before each pass.

If you go to the Other Shaving Goods review section http://badgerandblade.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=68 and search on "scuttle" you will turn up all of the scuttle related reviews. In that list are a number of reviews posted by California Cajun. He took a very standard approach to reviewing the five scuttles that he selected (including the Georgetown) that should give you a good understanding about the relative heat retention qualities of those scutlles.

Even so, at the end of the day YMMV - if you think it will work for you, go for it!

Thanks NJPaddy, This is exactly the kind of feed back I was looking for. I have a tea kettle I'll be using as a source for hot water. Is it pretty hefty or fragile?

I like mine very much. I can get hot lather for 2 passes.
The size is nice, it's not huge, especially if you have to move it in and out of wherever you keep it.
I have a small bathroom and I can't just keep it on the counter all the time.

The best part about it is the fact that I can make lather very easily even with the notorious hard to lather soaps.

Mike M, yup read them very informative especially Cajun's review talk about "Detail" Kudos to you Cajun. I wonder which scuttle you are using at the moment? Here's to hoping you chime in on this thread.

Please any other G5'Rs out there?

Great news Maxman! Thanks for your input. May I ask what color scheme you went with?

In appreciation,

Jesse

I've had a Blue 1.5 Dirty Bird for about a year. I think the hot lather thing is over-emphasized. As long as the lather is warmer than room temperature you will notice it, and it's very pleasant, especially in the cool/cold months. I use the scuttle even if I don't warm the lather because the lather bowl is so big and easy to generate a ton of lather in. It's also very stable so bumping it isn't an instant disaster. I think the G5 is nicer looking and I will get one this winter (though I don't know why they used a black plug). Even the cheaper ones I've seen on eBay look great. To me, a scuttle is an essential part of wet shaving.

The best solution for the g5 in my opinion is to buy a target cheap 10 buck hot pot , and use it on the lowest setting, its the perfect heat not extremely hot to destroy the lather, but perfect to have warm lather for 3 passes.

Is a "Hot pot" a kettle which boils water, or like a coaster that heats a mug?

I don't find it hefty. My hands aren't that big and it balances nicely in my palm with my thumb through the handle. Fragile? I wouldn't want to test it out by dropping it on the floor, but I bumped it against the faucet or sink a couple of times without incident. It feels solid, but breakable. I always handle it with a thumb or fingers through the handle and especially careful when I'm rinsing it out and drying it. Here's mine after almost a year:
