What's new

Gentlemen, help me create the perfect barbershop/apothecary. It WILL be designed!

I am a third year Interior Design student preparing for my "Capstone" project. This is a project intended to display my mastery over the curriculum and serve as the centerpiece of my portfolio. I have total creative freedom on this project, and I intend to design a barbershop/apothecary combination for discriminating gentlemen. And...

I need your help! Simply imagine your dream barbershop/apothecary and tell me what it would include. I am taking a very holistic approach to this space, and I would appreciate input on aspects ranging from branding all the way to space planning.

Some things that are already intended:

Retail cases with straights, SEs, DEs, brushes, strops, etc...
Display cases with highly valuable but NFS versions of the aforementioned
Hair cutting stations (of course)
Shave stations
Classrooms for teaching proper shaving technique
Apothecary space for creams, soaps, balms, etc...

And I've toyed with the idea of combining the barbershop/apothecary space with something that would seem a logical match. Perhaps a haberdasher or tobacconist.

So have fun, gentlemen! Let your imaginations run wild! I will be taking notes. When this project comes to fruition later next year, I will post extensive photos of the finished product. Thanks in advance.

Ah... then perhaps I should interview Ray.

And no matter. I'll not be deterred. Besides, mine is purely fictional at this stage. It would be a dream to some day make it a reality, but I'm purely creative and I have no business sense whatsoever.

Make sure to include the right furniture.
A couple of nice barber seats have been posted here before, maybe check those out?

Just a couple suggestions ...

- Antique barber chairs

- A walk-in humidor

- Smoking corner with leather chairs (might as well be comfortable as we wait for the haircut and shave!) :001_smile

- Old style (1930s?) 1-foot-squares black-and-white tile floor in checkerboard fashion.

- Marble countertops

- Old style (manual) cash register

We look forward to you posting your final design.

Have fun and good luck with your final grade!

Think Victorian england, dark woods and leather. I would love to see hardwood floors as well, with burgundy and deep green accents throughout the shop. I would love to see stand alone sinks next to the barber chairs. Keep them simple, with large bowls and maybe a simple faucet.

Since this is imaginary, I would not want hot lather machines, instead I would expect the barber to use a bowl and brush as well as straights for the shave.

Another neat touch may be to have lots of shaving bowls/mugs on the walls, with names of regular customers. Every time that customer comes in for a shave, the barber can retriever their bowl/mug and use it exclusively for them.

I'll continue to ponder this, as it is lots of fun!

This is my favorite suggestion so far. Consider it a part of the final plan. I love it! It reminds me of my favorite local pub where all of the people who have drank the entire 131 available beers has an engraved pewter mug hanging behind the bar.

I'm warming up more and more to the idea of a bar on the premises. I wonder, would I keep it strictly to beer, wine, and spirits, or would I include high-end coffees and teas?

And see, here is where it can begin to get dangerous. I'm all for a multi-purpose space. I love the idea of a bar, humidor, tobacconist, haberdasher, etc... but if too many of these things are included, it becomes very difficult to do ALL of them well.

This requires a great deal of thought. We're all on the same page, though. You guys are presenting visions of your dream space that are right in line with what I'm thinking.

A full bar (without sissy frapuccinos, et al.) and a cigar lounge are all that's necessary. You could have bare concrete floors and unpainted plywood on the walls, and you'd never lack for customers.

I can see it already!

I'll have a single malt and cigar while I wait for my Straight shave and haircut, seated on a leather armchair

I doubt I'll be allotted much more than 2000sf. I believe I'll be given a building "shell" to work within.

Love the shoeshine stations.

Ok, here's a summary of what we've got so far. Antique barber chairs and leather waiting chairs with a shoe shine station too. Throw in a full bar that include tobacco (pipe and cigars of course) and we have a pretty amazing place.

The classic barbershop in Indy sells Coke in glass bottles. An old-fashioned Soda Cooler with glass bottle would be neat.

Most the good ideas have been said, but the one thing I LOVE about the Barber I go to has a tub of Tootsie Rolls piled high. Maybe a nice bowl or something at the door so people can snag a couple on the way out.

Not sure I have meet anyone that doesn't like a good Tootsie Roll HAHA
