In my quest, what should I be on the lookout for?
Just the finish, and integrity of the top to clamp down?

Also make sure that neither of the blade stops at the front corners of the guard have been bent to prevent the blade from seating properly.

Or broken off entirely - I've seen it, and it's sad.

I've also seen one that was bent so that the head was almost parrallel with the handle. Other than that, what the others said.

Oh! The humanity! My saddest personally was the cased Damaskeene I recently got. The razor is 'picture-perfect', but the spring is shot because some jerk left their SHA VE ZEE brand blade in it for the last century or so. Probably would have been fine if those blades were the same dimension as ASR's, but sadly they are a good mm longer - that spring never had a chance, and man is it sad, because that razor looks brand new!
