That's a mature male tarantula of the genus Aphonopelma. Pretty good chance he's an Aphonopelma eutylenum (California ebony tarantula).

You must have very good luck with ladies.
Ladies love a man who is good at the taxonomy.

Good point. My disgust with bugs doesn't win me many "Husband-of-the-year" trophies around my house. Although, I am the one responsible for 99% of pest control (my son has taken about 1% of the share in the last year).
