I went on vacation to visit family. While I was there for a week, I also took advantage of the time and met with some potential employers since my wife wants to move back closer to family (we currently live about 1700 miles away from family). I thought it was important to have a good shave before I went on the interviews. Well, the day after I arrived I realized I had everything I needed--except my Parker Shavette. I debated on going to the store and buying some disposable BIC razors, but I have recently fell in love with straight (and shavette) shaving that I never want to go back. So I did the next logical thing--made my own shavette. This is what I used: two plastic forks and one of those black paper clamps.
I broke the fork end off and used the plastic handles. I had to file down the edge so it was narrow enough at the razor side so I could get the correct angle. Then I put the razor between the plastic handles and clamped them down. Simple as that, and quite effective too.
What a great shave! I only had one nick and minimal sting with aftershave on my chin--which is better than normal. I think the shave was that good because I took my time. I had large, exposed corners of the blade and I knew that could leave a deep cut. I also was wary that the blade would slip in the handle so I used minimal pressure. Since I was focusing so much on my technique, I had one of the best and most comfortable shaves yet! Today was my first shave after vacation with my Parker and I applied what I learned and had another great shave.
Needless to say, it was a good vacation. I've only been wet shaving for 5 months now, and never thought I would be this into it...
