Floris 89

I'm working my way through some Floris samples. Was really hoping to like 89 based on the reviews/descriptions I'd read - I really like C&S 88 and Hamman Bouquet and wanted to try another English rose scent.

But I don't get any rose :-( On me 89 smells like Hamman without the roses - in other words, just like baby oil. I've worn it twice now with the same impression. I'm tempted to go buy some baby oil and do a wrist to wrist impression to see if I'm missing anything from 89.

89 is one of my favorites (along with JF) definitely don't get a rose scent from 89. I get more of a lavender top notes and vetiver/sandalwood throughout the day.

Thanks, Azmark. Your impression is much closer to mine than some of the reviews I've read around the web. It's a very nice and classic scent, just not what I was expecting.

+1 No rose at all for me either. That's fine though. It's one of my favorite frags.

Where did you get the samples? I contacted Floris and they would not ship to the US.
I've been really bummed that they discontinued their Vetiver before I got the chance to try it.

ShopLondons.com has the Floris Scent Library.

Although I am not sophisticated enough to be able to discern the individual notes, I love No89. I find it understated and classy. Can't go wrong with it IMHO.

I personally love no. 89 and find the only similarities with Hammam are its floral characteristics. Hammam is much heavier and oily. Floris is a beautiful woody rose with spice and lily. Nonetheless, there has been talk on Basenotes that is has been recently reformulated into chemical-like mess.

Received my no89 last week and have to say that unlike the soap, I am somewhat disappointed. Can't fault the scent but does it fade quickly. Used twice as much as I usually would today and not a trace after just one hour! Is this a familiar sounding comment, or is it just me?

I use at as normal with my others. 3 to the chest, each wrist and inside my arm. Pulse points basically and I smell it most of the day. Are you using it on clothes or skin?

I use it solely on the skin. I'll try again tomorrow and see if it favours any better. Thanks for your reply.

Floris is expensive.
I'd like to find a similar scent to 89 but much cheaper and in aftershave form.
Anything comes close from the array of cheaper aftershaves?

From the Floris web site: bergamot, lavender, neroli, nutmeg, orange, petitgrain, geranium, rose, ylang-ylang, cedar, musk, oakmoss, sandalwood, vetiver.

In Base Notes I see it described as

woody aromatic scent
soapy-sandalwood, lavender,musk , citrus
understated, discreet
Suave and sophisticated yet totally understated.
Bergamot and flower flavours, the early notes are mostly dominated by the lavender and citrus smell, while moving to rose and ylang ylang.
lovely opening of orange blossom. It develops soapy-clean and gentle spice notes.
The floral notes are not heavy or too sweet
Light musk, mossy notes, and a nutty vetiver appear.
