What's new

First trip to a barbershop since I was a kid.

I decided I needed a change from the same routine, generic haircut that I have had for the better part of the last 12 years. I looked into authentic, old-school barbershops in my area and came across one that looked legit, got great reviews, very reasonable price, but still had an edge and the barbers in the shop look to be in their late 20's-30's, lots of tattoos, professional, old-school uniforms, etc. Seemed legit.

I was greeted with a handshake, asked how my day was going, sat in the chair and asked what I wanted done. I told the barber that I've have the same douchey haircut for over a decade (I'm 36) and wanted something a little more grown up, a bit classy and old school. He said, "I know exactly what you want!" He went to work, super nice guy, and every other barber in the shop was booked as well. It's a small shop, had 4 or 5 chairs total, and all were busy as this place apparently has a reputation for booking up very fast, and they actually turned down a few walk-ins that came in while I was there.

I ended up with one of the best cuts I have ever had. Basically it's a 50's cut with a nice fade, side part and flipped up and over in the front. Very old school and classy. I had to buy a comb at the drug store afterward because I have not used a comb to style my hair since picture day in grade school! They used some Suavecito pomade, which I ended up purchasing. I used to use Murray's but being petroleum based, that stuff never washed out (I used to use Murray's years ago) but the Suavecito is water based, so it should wash out easily.

My haircut was finished off with a warm lather straight razor shave on the neck, edges and sideburns, and topped off with some bay rum AS on the neck! All for $16, which I feel is a great deal given the service I got, how I was treated and the atmosphere. No cheesy techno music, high maintenance people, attitude or pretention, and outrageous prices. Sure there are barbershops that are less expensive in my area, but this place seems to have it's own particular vibe, while all the barbers are young, they are preserving an old school ethic and tradition, which I appreciate. Definitely going back! No more salons for me!

Yes, it was Lefty's! They have two locations, I went to the one on Garnett, but the one on Cass St. looks nice as well.

I went to their downtown location before they closed it. I used to live up right up the hill from them. Great place and Brian was the best. Loved the straight razor finish and the Masters bay rum. Luckily NYC has some great options or I'd be really bummed on the barber front.

Ahh I was in PB 2 weeks ago! Guess I'm gonna have to visit again lol.
Hodad's for lunch, Leftys for cut and shave and then to the rooftop of the Marriott for drinks.
Yup sounds like a New Year resolution sort of thing.

Glad to hear you had a good experience. I only go to a barbershop - gave up on the salons several years ago. I've got a good shop in my area, staffed by 4-5 barbers at any given time. Most are quite young, once of them is middle aged. They all do a good job, but I happen to like going to the same person. They don't take reservations, so it can be a wait sometimes. They top off the post-haircut neck shave with witch hazel. If you get an actual shave, they use Pinaud.
