First Sports Played

Just curious what first sports members played growing up and what do you play now? Organized sports.

I played baseball up until about 13 and got bored on how slow the game was. Most of my youth during baseball up until 15 I was always involved rodeos, bull riding and team roping.

When highschool came around, football was something I fit into right away and it got me closer to the girls :001_tongu. After high school and with few teammates from football I was introduced into rugby and played for 8 years before nearly losing most of my teeth in my mouth and breaking my nose a few times while playing for a club in CA that went on to win national championships a few years in a row.

During rugby I really fell in love with running and began to run marathons and was exposed to triathlons and there was where I think all the years of sports became in sync.

I started out in soccer and baseball back in kindergarten. Of course it was t-ball at first. I had a lot of early success in both winning district and regional championships and then around middle school the teams changed and we didn't win much of anything anymore.

In high school I decided to drop both, even though I was a pretty good ballplayer and took up wrestling and lacrosse. I've never been a big pump iron kind of guy so wrestling didn't really work out for me, but it put me in great shape for lacrosse season. Unfortunately the coaching staff and other players really put me off lacrosse altogether in high school and I didn't do either beyond freshman year.

From then I joined bowling club and played various intramurals, but nothing organized until college.

The college I attended had a club lacrosse team and the year of experience I had with it put me ahead of about 90% of the other freshmen trying it out. I started every game of my college career and lead the team in assists every year. Unfortunately I played attack which meant I really should have been scoring goals. Anyway, only got in 3 seasons because I decided to go ahead and graduate a semester early instead of sticking around.

Afterwards played some summer league lacrosse but honestly, most of the people that are good at lacrosse around here are dicks. Lots of glory hounds and such, to the point that it doesn't become a team game anymore.

I'd love to get a job coaching high school lacrosse and I've had several offers from past teammates and other friends in the sport, but I can't get out of work until 5 every day, which kind of kills that.

One thing that I can definitely say is that all of those athletics definitely made me hate running. Good for you, I wish I liked it. I can't seem to push myself physically unless I'm having fun.

My parents weren't big on the organized sports thing. When it was time for my older brother to sign up, we went to a baseball game. One kid--I assume he was the worst hitter on the team--got hit by a pitch. The next time he was up his coach told him to do it again. That was the end of that.

I started running track in high school. I lived overseas in 10th grade and started playing rugby, too. I kept playing until I was about 30. Now it's old man hockey (which is fun even though I didn't learn how to skate until my late 20s) and some triathlons each summer (which is idiotic, but the t-shirts are cool)

I grew up in Montreal so of course the first sport I played was hockey (when I was 6).
Through to my high school graduation I played (in leagues) hockey, baseball and football. I swam competitively (backstroke) from 11 - 15. I ran track when I was 16 & 17.
During my university years I played for the university football team and in a senior baseball league. I played hockey in a rec league.
When I graduated I had a tryout with a Canadian professional football team. I got hurt and got cut (probably would have gotten cut anyway). I never played organized football again, just flag football, weekend stuff. I played one year of Rugby because my friend kept recruiting me. I continued to play baseball until business travel interfered when I was 27. I switched to a twice a week rec league and played until I was 35. I switched leagues in hockey to a senior rec league when I was 40 (35 and up:w00t:). I played in the senior league semi-regularly until I was 58 (just like Gordie Howe ), travel permitting.

I played one season of tee-ball. Didn't like it as I could tell that the adults were way too serious about it. I switched to soccer and never looked back. Played basketball in high school, then went full-circle (sorta) and started playing softball as an adult.

I started in baseball, soccer, basketball, etc. The more common sports. We did not have much of a football team for young kids, at least until middle school age.

In middle school I started downhill ski racing. I did not participate in many other sports at that point, they were not fun any more. I skied all the way through high school and then coached a few teams in college. I still ski regularly, but I have not raced in a few years. I have played some beer league softball and flag football. Other than my normal exercise routine I don’t play too many sports any more.

Was that skiing in high school or in a league during high school?

As a very small kid, football, baseball and basketball. I always hated basketball. By high school, I narrowed it down to football, wrestling and track.

My sister taught me to skate when I was four and I started playing ice hockey when I was five. I also started playing football and studying martial arts around the same time. Played both football and hockey until high school where I had to choose one so I chose football. I also surfed and was an HB city junior lifeguard almost every summer growing up.

Yes, I was on my high school ski team and I also raced USSA in the central division. I was invited to a few FIS races but I never did go. It was getting to serious for me and I was starting to not have fun and loose interest. So toward the end of high school I only did the high school team and dropped the other stuff.

I played baseball and then switched to basketball. I had to make a choice because my mom said she wasn't driving me to both, and to pick one.

Then, I umpired and coached Little League when my nephew played.
