What's new

First shave with vintage Old Spice

And it was very nice indeed! Still has a vague scent to it but it lathered great and got the job done. Not quite as good as vintage Williams but I will be on the lookout for more.

I used Old Spice for almost 35 years exclusively. I used my last puck up several years ago (long before discovering B&B). Recently I acquired a new OS puck but have been unable to bring myself to use it.

I have such great memories of it and now with many many other soaps used (again thanks to B&B) I am almost afraid to see if it is a magical as my memory of it.:001_smile

Love the OS! I agree that vintage Williams is, perhaps, a better performer, but OS has the edge on the "nostalgia" factor. At any rate, vintage soaps are much more fun to use than current production soap, for me any way. I can't imagine a worker in the OS factory thought his soap would be around 50 years from then, none the less get the attention they do today.

I find the 1950's era OS puck I'm using to be the equal of the 1960's Williams that's in my rotation, even if it's a little more sensitive to the amount of water I use...too much and it gets pretty airy, while the Williams seems to be less fussy.

It really is kind of sad to think about the day, not too far in the past, when a guy could go to the corner drug store and find these two tallowy top performers on the shelf.

I have 3 NOS pucks of Old Spice soap that I bought around 1993 or so, when I found out it was being discontinued. Old spice shaving soap was my favorite soap for a long time-way outperformed Williams and Colgate as far as I was concerned.

Haven't been able to bring myself to use any of the 3.

The stuff was made to be used.

Tonight, I'll hit the OS soap, and then hit the vintage AS and cologne before bed.

Bliss.

Second go with it this morning was even better. I used a softer brush, a vintage Ever-Ready 250PB, and it seemed to work better.

I have a question about the mug this was in. I asked in the general discussion area but no responses so far. The OS mug this came in is plain white, no wording or ship image. The box has a bar code and the mug itself is a Late Glass Mug 04, the short version with lip around the rim, so it came from the mid 70's until the early 90's. The set is in such pristine condition there's no way it faded or wore off. On the bottom it has the usual Shulton, with the mold number 12 above it, and the words Old Spice.

Have any of you Old Spice afficianados ever seen a plain white Old Spice mug before?

This is new to me, but I'm no expert. I'd guess it just got past QC. The glass mugs were machine made, so it's quite possible it got packaged missing the graphics.

With an unused puck these unmarked mugs go for $2,500-$3,000.

Used however they seldom hit $5.....

Aw, crap... Hey, maybe I can take some magic markers and make it a "Rare hand-painted Old Spice Mug". How much would that bring in?

Send them to me, I'm pretty sure I can open them. ;)

Actually, once I've been here long enough, I thought I'd see if I could trade them on the BST. I liked the Old Spice soap, but have since found other products I like FAR better. Still was better than Williams or Colgate, which were the only two soaps I could find in those days.

I'd wager my propolis you'll get plenty of takers for that NOS OS soap!

I'm guessing you're right. Funny thing is-I threw the original boxes away!!!!. All three were under my sink and I figured they would take up less space if I got rid of the boxes. They're still in the original, sealed plastic-but the boxes went bye bye around 12 years ago. Of course, I had no idea they'd be sought after and that not having the box might negatively influence the value.

I bought these soaps from a clearance table at Eckerd's drugs and I think they were $2-3 each. IIRC, they had dozens and I only bought the three because I figured that would last me for years. Guess I should have bought all they had.:biggrin1:

Yeah no box is no issue. Plenty of guys would love to pick them up on BST...including me (then I could probably bring myself to use the one I am saving).

I picked up around 10 pucks sometime in the 80's at a local drug store which was going out of business. If I had know OS was headed the way of the Dodo I would have laid in a closet full. But I blissfully just shaved my way through them all before realizing it was gone for good.

I just picked up an unused Mug with soap from an ebay auction, haven't got around to trying it yet. I was afraid I had overpaid for it, about $24 with shipping, but I am currently watching an auction with the top bid of $32 and has a couple of days to go. I don't feel so bad now.
