First shave ever with a Feather.

Well here it is, The first shave I ever had with a Feather. I loaded it up in the fat handled Tech, worked up some lather and let er rip. First pass, I could just barely hear the blade slicing through the stubble. However, I could not feel it.
The second and third pass seemed like it took everything off with the first pass because it felt as though I was running an unloaded razor across my face and I heard nothing. Fourth pass, I could hear the occasional straggler stubbles getting sliced away still feeling like an unloaded razor all the while.
Here comes the aftershave, I slapped on some Pinaud Clubman. Holy Crap! I'm on fire! I have not felt that kind of burn in awhile! My first impression of the blade is that it does not look like anything special. It seems to be pretty dang sharp, It does the job, and I may have to slow down with it. This is a blade I want to like. I want it to work for me but seeing how they are so expensive, It would be an occasional treat if I found the sweet spot with this blade. Clearly there is something special about these blades.

If $30 for 100 blades(approximately 200-300 shaves) is expensive just think about what else you spend $30 on

Good point! Guaranteed more shaves than a 10 pack of Mach 3s for 25 bucks. That's for sure. Since going DE back in August, my face has been in better shape. I do however, have some scars from a couple of shaves gone awry but they are fading. Overall, I have been paying more attention to the condition of the skin on my face and I notice a difference from the little changes. Good Times.

Absolutely, even my fiance has noticed how much better my skin looks now that I'm not scraping 5 blades across my face, and that I'm using a brush and soap has made a large difference as well, I really tried many different combo's with cartridge razors, different razors, different creams, and gels and foams, and I was still unhappy with my shaves

well I'm not unhappy anymore, plus I don't mind dropping $30+ bucks on blades when I'm going to get that many AWESOME shaves out of them, DE is the best thing I have ever done for my face

i was throughly impressed with how sharp it was, but sharpness doesn't always mean a comfortable shave. I wouldn't mind owning 100 of them but there are other blades i would purchase first. To me it wasn't as forgiving as some blades, meaning you need to have your technique down and be careful with it. I'm glad you enjoyed it though. It is always nice when you find a good blade.

Hi, I lost my Feather virginity today too. Well, what to say? It is sharper than my Astra SP. Not the miracle blade on my Muhle R89. With my beard I think everything takes lot of time on chin section.
The reasons might be that a) I just need more practise, or b) the razor could be little more agressive, or that final thing c) my beard is just that barbwire.

But as I like to get all that grow away, I can do it with astra and now with feather. I so like that my chin is so smooth (BBS) in every direction, and with DE that has been possible, not with gillette.
Do I need too much? Do "normal" people let it be something else? And last question, how long do you shave normally? For me it is an zen-thing. I like to take it slow. That is my time, nobody elses.

Please fill ______ in what would you think might be wrong.

Thanks,

Jari

ps it is snowing again. Wholer Helsinki is full of snow again this year. Really.

Just a whole lot of hype....

I wouldn't call them special, but also I can't say it's hype. They do seem a bit unique amongst the various blades I've tested. They are just... different than others. I have a group of blades that perform very similar to each other when put in the same razor... personna labs, gillette blacks and blues, voskhods. There are the blades that function in those same razors, but don't shave as close in the end... Astra's, Derbys.

Pop a Feather into those razors and they are definitely different then any of the others. Most of the razors I've used them in, they shaved extremely close, but were also very unforgiving of angle and pressure not being close to perfect. I've found a few razors where they seem pretty forgiving for me, tho, and outshave the others I've tried hands down. For me they are amazing in the slim and super adjustable, as well as in the Merkur 11c. They were worth picking up 80 of from the BST with a slightly better price per blade than they are usually seen online, but even at $.30 a blade for 100, if you find a couple razors you like using that they shine in, they aren't really expensive, they are just higher priced than other DE blades.

When I finished the first shave, everything appeared perfectly normal. I did still have to apply all of the techniques as usual to remove all of the hairs from my face. The corner of my jaw right under my ear has always been one of the problem areas for me ( I cannot ever Get it perfectly smooth without hacking myself up ) last night it was perfect with no extra effort. The underside/ tip of my chin is the same way as it grows sideways. It was not perfect, but almost. I did feel just a little more burn from the aftershave after using the feather. I didn't cut myself, but the feather feels like it is not getting bogged down when I hit the problem areas of my face. I realize though, that this blade can irritate if I am not more careful. My shaves take 8-10 minutes, I think I may have to stretch it out to 12-15. Time will tell.

I read they were ninja sharp, Someday I am going to go visit those tiny ninja sword honers

Mack - you'd better hurry as there is only one ninja left! :http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/meet-japan-ninja-63-year-old-engineer-article-1.1140989

on the Feather - I have a love/hate relationship with this blade and Feather's beautiful AS-D1 DE razor is not helping. On the bright side, I had an amazingly smooth DFS with a feather in my new to me Shick Krona this morning.

My second shave with feather was not so smooth.. My fault. I was distracted, and I ws a little bit of a hurry. Feather punished me instantanously. But that happens with astra too. Todays shave was not bbs, but lot better than with cartridge razor ever.

I've noticed that the "zero pressure" rule applies moreso with the feather blade than with any other, as well a fairly mild razor will make a big difference as well

Yeah, I did the same mistake this morning, allowing my mind to wander and get distracted. Of course, I was using a straight razor, so my punishment is a close to 2 inch long slice in my cheek. *sigh* That'll learn me tho... hopefully. lol

If you look at a Feather blade with a 10x loupe, you'll see that there are three distinct bevels, and the smallest, at the edge, is highly polished. They are _really_ sharp!

The good part is that they give a wonderful shave. The bad part is that they are unforgiving. If you lean on a Feather, it will cut you or take off a layer of skin (= razor burn).

So use a light, light, light touch, and enjoy the shave.

Well the Feather lasted 3 shaves. The 3rd shave was ok, I really cannot complain about the blade at all. It is a good blade, I will need to adjust to the blade. The first and second shaves were pretty good. The first shave was interesting, the first pass was giving the typical stubbles being cut sound feedback and the 2nd and 3rd pass were silent. The 4th pass gave just a wee bit of cutting sound ATG, but not much. These things do get most of the hairs the first time around due to their sharpness. I do believe in their sharpness, However, I was just a bit disappointed that I couldn't get another shave out of the blade. I average 2 complete shaves per blade pretty much regardless of blade brand. I do not know why because I do not have really thick hair, and I do not have dense growth. Maybe my hairs are tougher, I am not quite sure. The wilkies go 2 shaves, the Personnas go 2 shaves also. The main difference I noticed is the effortless cutting with which the Feathers cut, it just seems smoother but I do feel the extra burn when slappin on the aftershave.

Sounds like your first was a success.

I cannot get a third shave out of a Feather; tried it twice, and lost both times. I enjoy using them for special occasions, but they don't have a spot in the permanent rotation.

My fiance uses Feathers in her 23C and they are the only blades she likes. I, however, get a fine shave the first time, but subsequent ones are terrible and I tend to avoid them. She can have them.

For today, I will change to more tested astra sp. As we are having christams with father in law plus so many extras. I have some difficulties to calm down.... I thought to use my gillette whole christmas, but I do want to have a nice shave, whatever tue conditions. Astra will do its job, and gives me that little extra help. I think.
