Looks great, Jim!

It is hard to judge quality of the roast until the next day; the beans are filled with CO2 that needs to degas a bit. It is still fun to try it right after, though.

The Gene is tricky to hear the cracks with the banging of the chaff swiper and the on/off of the thermostat. Eventually your ear will pick them out easily - 1st crack sounds like pencils breaking.

You can also try pre-heating the drum before adding the beans. Sometimes that makes the cracks easier to hear since there is more moisture in the beans. Try running it up to 300 degrees for a minute or two, E-stopping, and then adding the beans (carefully, so you don't burn yourself).

Next time you are in the area we can roast some stuff on the Hottop, and you'll be amazed how freakin' loud the cracks are.

Well I got up and put on a Technivorm of the Guji Sidamo I roasted yesterday, I am sipping my fruitcup jam berry tart strawberry shortcake coffee and I am pretty darn happy with the result. Its always such a hoot to see the grinds foam up and roil when its this fresh.

Sounds like you got it right!
