What's new

Finally got it!

So while I was at work today I received a text update that my package had been delivered and was ready for pick-up at my UPS store box. The item delivered was my Timeless SS .95 OC with matte finish and plaid handle. I've been shaving with the same razor for the last 15 years, so I was pretty excited to get my hot little hands on this. Took a shower when I got home, and shaved right after (this is my usual routine as I get up really early for work, so it saves me time to shower and shave the night before).

Anyway I'm strangely impressed. My daily razor for the last 15 years has been a Merkur Futur, typically at setting 3, which is a 1.35mm blade gap, compared to the Timeless' .95. I ordered the .95 and OC because I figured that though it's the most aggressive combo Timeless offers, it would be seemingly mild compared to what I'm used to, and I was right. But, oddly, weirdly, I feel like I actually got a closer shave compared to my Futur. Does that make any sense? I didn't do anything differently this time around either. I'm typically a with the grain shaver, except for my neckline where my hairs seem to grow in different directions, and just shaved as I normally do. Maybe it's just that "something new" feeling. I don't know, but oddly enough it seemed like a closer shave.

Also, thankfully, it liked my goto blade, the infamous, made in Greece, Bic Chrome Platinum. The shave was remarkably smooth, and slick. It's my first time shaving with an OC razor and I had read that open comb allows lather to get right up against the blade and provide a slicker, more "cushioned" shave. I don't know if that's true or not, the shave did feel slicker in that the razor felt it glided more smoothly across my face compared to my other razor.

And for the obligatory pics:

Nice looking razor!

I'm looking at their brass offering. Very pretty, but maybe a bit mild. We'll see.

You've been a member of this forum since 2009 and you only used one razor!!? Wow, talk about will power! It's so hard not to want other razors. My tastes and desires change almost everyday because of this forum!😂

I'm boring that way. I shaved with a Progress for about a dozen years before that until it broke, which led to me purchasing the Futur. I'm so boring in fact that I've also predominantly been using one blade during all that time as well, Personna Comfort Coats. When I started wet shaving back in the early to mid 90's, I used to just go and buy my blades at the local Thrifty (not sure if you're old enough to remember those). They came in a metallic 5 or 10 blade dispenser. They were Gillette, but I want to say Schick as well. Eventually, they stopped carrying them. DE shaving was pretty much dead by then, so demand was pretty much non-existant.

I recently rediscovered this forum after being away for a long time and started trying out new blades. I've tried several brands from different sampler packs, but still think the Comfot Coated Personna's are better than most, and as good as the best ones, except for my new favorite, Bic Chrome Platinums. I'm really digging that blade and it has quickly become my new goto.

So far as the brass Timeless you're looking at, I say go for it. It may be on the mild side, but I bet it cuts "above its weight" so to speak. The .95 gap on my example is much milder than the 1.35mm gap on setting 3 of the Futur, which was my preferred setting, but I felt like the Timeless gave me a closer shave, which is really odd. If you get it, and are wanting something that leans aggressive, I'd order it with the .78 blade gap and open comb. I didn't think I'd like an open comb but took a chance am really liking it. I've only shaved with it once so far, but my razor felt like it glided more slickly across my face comapred to my solid bar Merkur.

Bic's are nice indeed! I've used kcg's, Astra SP and Bic. They are all pretty good, but Bic beats them hands down every time.

As for the closer shave: you only mention blade gap, but there's also blade angle and blade exposure. Perhaps the timeless' specs in that regard better suit your way of shaving. 😉

As for the open comb: the design of the combs (reaching upwards from below) could also be a contributing factor. Parker also uses this design (variant oc) as does merkur (progress). Dont know about Merkur, bu i have a variant oc and it supposed to be agressieve in higher settings, but it doesnt feel that way. Its a very effective and efficient design.
