Field Jackets?

The other day I was out with some friends, and a guy I knew had a really nice jacket. A type of jacket that I have been wanting. I don't really own a classy casual jacket. He said the company name of the jacket was Andrew Marc. So when I got home I looked it up.

I am pretty sure it was this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Marc-New-York-Andrew-Melrose/dp/B008E5LV9C

But might be closer to this..idk:

It wasn't made out of wool or leather. It was a canvas material. The description on the site says nylon and polyester. It may have been that, but I thought it felt more canvas like when I touched it. Looked very casual but yet still really nice and classy. Wasn't bulking at all. Just a slim fitting but yet warming jacket that you can wear with a t-shirt and some jeans on one night, and a button up and a tie on another night.

I did some more searching around and I found out that these type of jackets are called Field Jackets...so I think.

The Andrew Marc one is wayyyy beyond my price tag. Especially for something that I am not sure if it's the right jacket that I saw a friend wear. He isn't a good friend that I see regularly. More so a friend of a friend that I see once in a blue moon.

Does anyone own something like this and can give me a bit more info? So, they are in fact called Field Jackets? Do you know any in the $50-$75 price range?

It is definitely a field jacket-inspired design, based on the style of military field jackets. I am pretty sure that you can find similar styles from many different clothing makers, but at the price point you are at, your best bet might be to just buy the real deal.

Here's what a quick Amazon search turned up:

EDIT: For clarification, when I said "the real deal", I was speaking of the M-65, as detailed by little Big Feather below, not the Andrew Marc jacket that you were originally asking about.

The Alpha and Knox Ind. M-65 are copies of the US Military Field jacket first issued in 1965, hence the designation M-65.
You might check Army Navy surplus stores and hunting/outdoor stores in your area. They are common & cheap and last
for years. I had a few going back to the first 1965 and a few older ones to the 50's...

Agreed, it's an M65 ripoff. The old field jacket was never the greatest design (not waterproof) but worked with the liner and other cold weather gear. I still have mine, we transitioned to Goretex for outerwear soon after.

Unless you specifically want a 'field jacket' and do want something for outdoor use, I'd suggest a Marmot, North Face or similar softshell. They're far more useful in the outdoors, and even the military wears them now though in different colors (Arcteryx has it's own military line because of this).

Way out of the OP's price range but Wild Things a small company out of North Conway makes tactical softshell jackets for the military:

I have one of their packs and the level of quality and service you get with WT is worth every penny!

And I agree with the post above, a softshell would be a better jacket for all around use than a M-65 canvas material.

Thanks for the response guys.

I am not looking for an actual military jacket or a replica of them. Nor am I looking for an outdoors jacket. The jacket this guy was wearing didn't look anything like that. I would classify it more under a peacoat type jacket. It was really nice and classy, but something you can wear with a t-shirt and jeans. It was black too btw. It wasn't camo.

This one is alright:

I am tired of wearing zip up sweathshirts when going out with friends while they all have classy/casual jackets or sweatshirts. But if I am going to spend $100 on that. I might as well spend $50 more and get the Andrew Marc jacket. Some sites are selling them for around $150.

try jackets made by Alpha Industries or Spiewak. they can be had lightly-used and relatively cheaply on the auction site of your choice...

I have a original M-65 Large size that was issued to me... never worn it because I go to my first base and was given a BDU gortex set...

For the 'look' you are going for, try a Kuhl Burr jacket.

It's not military, though it has some of the design features, sort of like the original jacket you linked, and they're spacious, comfortable, and fairly rugged. I recommended one to a friend because he was wearing his old field jacket in civvies and he looked a little odd. The Kuhl passes muster for day to day civilian wear without being too weird.

I prefer the brown over the black color myself, but it's up to you.

Not to disregard your price range - I think you can find some nice options. If, however, you find yourself deciding to buy a quality item to last you a lifetime (literally) here is a nice option (two colors) from Filson.

Timeless - design dates back to late 1800s or early 1900s. $235 at full price - shop for deals (25% off is often available). I love all of my Filson products - many are decades old and look new.

Rothco makes a decent copy of the M65. Usually if you search something like BDU Field Jacket you can find a jacket just in that price range with three or four color options.

Those look amazing. Thanks.

So far, this is what I have found in my price range:

A Filson is literally a four generation jacket.

I know a guy who still on occasion hunts in his grandfather's original (1920ish) Tin Cruiser. Grandpa wore it for work and field for 30-40 years, dad wore it another 20, and now HIS son's got his eyes on it for when he's big enough.

I don't have one, but that doesn't mean I don't want one. :) They're awesome.

I think that is a decent looking field jacket. Can't beat the price, either.

Advice - pay attention to return policy, terms, costs and any restocking charges. I am particular about fit (broad shoulders, long arms = XL but I have more slim waist than most XLs are sized for) so I am always hard pressed to find a co for table fit online.

Check out Nordstrom to see if they have they style you like. They have a Half Yearly Men's Sale that can be amazing value.

They have the wool blend Paxton jacket for $250 which should get heavily discounted in that sale. Go and have a chat with one of the sales people there - they are generally very helpful.

A couple of years ago I picked up an Andrew Marc car coat for $100 at that sale.

I am wearing a Ted Baker shirt and some Hugo Boss jeans today that I got for half price. I do most of my yearly clothes shopping at that sale.

The half yearly sale starts on Boxing Day and the bargains can go fast, so get there early.
