What's new

feathers and my first BBS shave

I've been shaving with a DE for almost a year now and I have yet to get a BBS shave, until yesterday. In fact, for the most part, I have only been getting simply adequate shaves and the occasional mild razor burn.

I've tried various combination of soaps (Tabac, Em's, VHD, William), and creams (AOS, Arko, Derby, plus more on the way). I've tried various blades (7am, Sharp, Derby Extra)... and i could only get a decent shave with several passes and working up to ATG.

Frustrated, I was about to go pick up a cartridge razor when I decided to try some Feathers. As an afterthought, I also ordered a cheap Feather safety razor (~$13) as well.

I tried out the razor and blades and I have never had a smoother shave, ever. I am amazed. The razor is the least aggressive I have used and I only got a very small weeper, but I got the smoothest closest shave ever.

I'm amazed that the cheapest razor is now my favorite.

This morning I made one pass ATG and had no irritation, just some buffing for touch ups. If I had tried that with any other blades/razors I would have torn up my neck.

Funny to hear you say that - I had the exact same experience a few weeks ago or so. I waited 2 months to try a feather blade in my cheap feather portable razor and bam - what a combo - first BBS ever! I was also comfortable enough with the feather blade to bust out some buffing and j-hooks.

Following the light razor -> aggressive blade, heavy razor -> milder blade rule usually works well

It's true! A feather works wonders in my 40s SS, but I much rather a Derby in my Futur. It's like some crazy math problem where they all cancel each other out and you're left with a great shave.
