Feather stainless steel vs fatboy

Hi everyone, I am really enjoying all the info and advices I am getting from these forums.

I have been shaving with a Mach 3 for sometime now a I was very happy.

Then I started building a interest for straight razors, and ordered some beautiful ones from the invisible edge, I must say that Steve was really helpfully and offered me great service.

When I started shaving with them I went WTG AND ATG, I had no problems with my neck but got a lot of in grown hairs and razor bumps on my cheeks.

I then changes to WTG AND XTG but had the same problem, I then got interested in buying a couple of de razors and found some really nice ones with the executing shaving company, Brian there was just great always ready to help and I ordered really nice and rare de razors.

I always shower before my shave and put preshaveing oil and use trufiitt and hill 1805 with a good badger.

I am really anxious now because next week I am going to start my first shave with either the feather stainless steal or the fatboy from Gillette both with feather blades.

I am going to try a WTG pass only and see how this goes.

I would really wish to get your options and comments on which razor I should choose and if you have any advices. Wishing you all a wonderfull week.

Welcome to B&B.

After your first DE shave....you wonder why you were so nervous. Plus you have some SE skills (pressure, etc).

I cannot comment on your razors, but have read great things about them both. The reviews on each razor within the forum may sway you one way or the other. I'd stick to WTG until your comfortable to try XTG. There is still parts of my neck that don't like ATG.

I can recommend the feather blades. I rotate between them and the Gillette 7 o'clock yellows.

Hey welcome to B&B!

My advice for DE shaving, and I think a lot of people would agree, is to order a nice blade sampler pack and try different DE blade brands. All blades respond to skin differently, and they all act somewhat different depending on what safety razor you are loading them into.

My first couple months of wet-shaving were with Wilkenson Sword blades, which are moderate middle-of-the-road blades you can scoop up at Walmart cheap. They were ok, but I ordered a big sampler package and there are many other brands that worked better than the swords.

I tried the Feather blades, and they were not kind on my face. Of course it could be that my feeble skills are no match for the Feather blades... they have a reputation for being for experienced shavers. I would say it's like a teenager learning to parallel park in a Ferrari. I'll get back to the Feathers after I make it through the blade sampler pack.

Oh, and definitely check out all the Mantic59 youtube videos for a ton of tips and advice. Good luck and happy shaving!

Welcome to the forum! i would go with the Fatboy as it is an adjustable and you may find the Feather a bit mild.

Welcome to B&B Tarek Hamila. If you're already using a straight razor, you have nothing to really worry about using a DE razor. I will say Feather razor blades are very sharp and I wouldn't suggest using them until you have at least a little experiance with a DE razor. If you relax, pay attention and take things slow you can (obviously) use them, but be prepaired for at least a little bit of bleeding.

If you're really interested in an adjustable razor, you may find that a Slim or a Super Adustable will give you a better shave than a "Fatboy" will. I know I have, but to each his own.

Welcome to the forum! i would go with the Fatboy as it is an adjustable and you may find the Feather a bit mild.

Celestino, I hope you're referring to the DE razor that Feather makes and not the blades because there is nothing "mild" about Feather blades.

Thank you guys so much for your support, it is really nice to find caring people.

I am going to try my first DE shave end of this week, i will surely let you know how it went.

I finally got a couple of shaves with my feather as d1, and I must say, what a smooth shave, I really did not feel the blade cutting through, and I was using feather blades.

It was so smooth that I did not get any feed back from the razor, that I did not like a lot, I had to make sure every time if I shaved that specific area.

The coming week I will use the edwin jagger de89.

Welcome to B&B!

I, too, am a recent convert, and the Feather AS-D1 is my weapon of choice. I have several other DE razors, including an adjustable Aristocrat (a Slim with gold coloring). The AS-D1 is by far my favorite DE. You can shave with wild abandon, and it is still very safe, even with a Feather blade (which is about all I use). The great thing about the AS-D1 is you can shave every day; you don't need to skip a day like some people do because their face is too raw from a too-close or rough shave.

By the way, the Feather AS-D1 gives great audible feedback when it is cutting whiskers. You can clearly hear a scritching sound when it is cutting just right.

Enjoy!

Feather all the way, although I am going to have to give the fatboy a try now after reading this.

Welcome! I, like you am new to DE shaving. Fell in love with it from word go. After a couple of months with my Merkur HD I narrowed down to Astra and Persona blades, the combination was perfect for closeness and comfort. Of course the RAD got the better of me and I was on the prowl for a new razor to add to the trusted HD. After much review reading plunged into the Feather AS. I have strong stubble and rely sensitive skin on left side of neck area with whiskers growing in all directions. The Feather with feather blade was just magic, a totally different shave though and I am still perfecting my technique, but every time I get it right its an awesome start to day. Take your time with Feather, it shaves very differently to HD, milder, kinder but so potent IMHO, takes time to get the angle right though. I was surprised how far I could push it and still no cuts, incredible. The great thing is now I can shave against the grain for a super close shave and no irritation on my neck! Enjoy!!!!

Most people on here, once they get experienced enough, usually sell off their Feathers. They just don't shave close enough for most. Either a Fatboy or Slim are adjustable and very handy for both the beginner and the people who look for a more aggressive shave. I definitely would NOT go with a nearly $200 razor for starters.
