Feather AS

I know that if I dig enough I will find the answer, but all my searches are turning up blanks or not the information I am looking for. Yes its me and not the search function, I am feeling a little under the weather and a tad stressed about getting an order finished:blush:

Here's my problem, I won a Feather AS on another site, and it arrived a couple of days ago. For the last few years all I have been using are old Gillettes, mostly open combs, and I just can't seem to get a good close shave with the AS. I even went as far as loading up a feather blade, something I never do because my face just doesn't like blades that are that sharp. Well in the 3 shaves I have tried with it I have given up after 4 passes and finished with my New Standard. I want to like this razor, the fit and finish on it is impeccable, but if all I can get is 5 o'clock shadow close I may have to give up on it.

If someone could point me to a thread with tips on using this razor or have some advice on angles I would greatly appreciate it. If I can't get it figured out by the end of the month I may just have to offer it up for trade for another razor that is on my want list:blushing:

Thanks

George

The Feather AS is capable of very close shaves and with a Feather Blade it can be so smooth that it feels like there is no blade in it.

The trick is that it needs to have the handle out straighter than most other razors. Compared to a Merkur, it needs to be 10 to 20 degrees closer to perpendicular to your face. It actually feels a little awkward at first. It is not my favorite razor, but it works very well, gives close shaves and is almost impossible to cut yourself with. You don't want a super thick cushiony lather either. If you find that there is still lather on your face after you make a pass, your lather may be a little to thick. Too low an angle can cause this as well. Be sure not to put any pressure on it. I got razor burn from mine when I first got it, because I put too much pressure on it. It felt like it wasn't doing anything, so I put some pressure on it.

I believe the AS is a very capable razor, I have just yet to find that sweet spot and it is the first razor that I was able to use a feather blade without feeling like I had sanded my face after the first pass. I have never owned or used a Merkur razor, I went from an EJ89L to vintage Gillettes and have only used the Gillettes for a couple of years now so even the angle I used with the EJ is forgotten. I will keep at it for a month and then I will have to pass it on to someone else to enjoy if I don't get it down.

I really like how the head completely covers the blade from end to end, no tabs sticking out.
