What's new

Favorite Winter gear brands?

Well Winter is here, at least in the Midwest. Temperatures are dropping and some have even gotten some substantial snow fall. So just curious what you all prefer to wear as far as Coats, gloves, shoes etc....?

For Brands I pretty much only buy Arcteryx now unless I am looking for down or wool. I am located by the Arcteryx Outlet so am able to get many things for half price though. For wool base or midlayers I like Icebreaker and Ibex. I have a few North Face jackets that I like too.

Shoes I wear my Keen boots usually. I go for the fit and since I have wider feet the Keens fit me perfectly. They have Keendry liners too which is similar to Goretex. I also have a pair of Goretex lined Bates Army boots with a insulated liner that is good for really serious weather.

Wow you are lucky to have a Arcteryx outlet near you! They're pretty pricey but great. I own several jackets from TNF, Patagonia and Marmot. But Mountain Hardwear has been my main go to for several years. Especially their newer shells that incoporate their Dry-Q technology.

As far as as down jackets I really like my MH Sub Zero, Patagonia Down Sweater and for the really cold weather I go to my TNF Mcmurdo Parka. Mid layers again I'm kind of all over the place but I have really liked Eddie Bauers First Ascent Cloud Layer Fleece pullovers. Really nice bang for your buck.

As for socks, Smartwool has been pretty reliable. For boots I have a pair of North Face Back-to-Berkley boots which are made of a balistic mesh and do a pretty good job in light to moderate snow. For the deep snow I have a pair of Sorel Conquest boots.

As for gloves I have a couple pairs of Marmot and MH gortex ski gloves. My favorites are my Goorin Brothers "The Major" fingerless wool gloves.

I was an arcteryx fan until they moved production from canada to china.

I prefer Canada Goose, Western Mountaineering, and Feathered Friends.

I like Patagonia and MH and Marmot too.. but I only have Polos and button downs from Patagonia and Marmot.. haven't tried their jackets or fleece, etc.

The majority of Arcteryx gear is now made in China, but not all. Several are still made in Canada and some in places like El Salvador, Italy, Bangladesh, etc... I think their Veilance and Leaf lines are mostly made in Canada but I could be wrong. But in all honesty if I wasn't getting 50-75% off Arcteryx, I might not be buying it. It doesn't get crazy cold out here, only like -5ish at most.

Canada Goose stuff is great - my only complaint is that every other CG jacket you see in Vancouver is a fake one because they have become such a fashion statement. Kind of like Montcler but not as pricey. Not familiar with the other two brands.

Most of my cold weather stuff comes from Marmot with the exception of a CloudVeil softshell jacket. Very solid investment.

I'm a big fan of Penfield jackets and vests. Red Wings for the feet, except when its really nasty and I go head-to-toe North Face.

OOOOOOOOO..a tough one.

Classic fabrics? Filson (awesomeness), Smartwool, icebreaker, ibex. Love them all.
Up to date materials? I use Marmot, North Face (old gear which kicks new quality hands down), Patagonia and Outdoor Research.
Feet? Steger Mukluks and moccasins are the best for comfort and warmth (and they breathe!). Really awesome - like wearing 4x4 slippers in the worst conditions.
Hats and hands: Filson hats and Smartwool toques. Hands - various.

I hope to never have to use much again.

lots of smartwool, base layers, socks, neck gaiter, hat. and gloves for flying with.

Marmot and MH, anything MH. I've got some flannel lined EMS pants that I still love, but may never wear again.

Asolo boots, and really cold? Danner insulated boots.

that said, I remember seeing water just laying around on the ground, all frozen, but don't ever plan on having to deal with it again.

Hmm, i only use norwegian brands i guess. Norrøna and bergans, expensive but worth every $. Same brands as the norwegian army uses.

Zamberlan boots for me. They feel like I am wearing gloves on my feet. I am sure that it is just a case of the particular boot form fitting my foot perfectly but they are fantastic boots. They are pricy but I am on my second pair after wearing my other pair for over 3 years every day.

Take Care,
Richard

+1. Love mine too!

Big Arcteryx fan. Their coats just seem to fit me well and very well made. Patagonia are nice but the sleeves and torso are always too long for me no matter what size. I also like Mountain Hardwear. I have a down jacket and goretex shell that are great quality for the price I paid.

Gotta get yourself some SmartWool socks too!

I have a pretty wide assortment of old Patagonia plus newer Mountain Hardware, Arcteryx and North Face (well, it's pretty old too). I also have a really old Columbia anorak that is nice when the weather isn't too bad, or for layering when it's cold and dry.

For boots, my go-to pair are insulated Danners that have been through everything.

Anyone have any experience with Spyder? http://www.spyder.com/

When going to European ski resorts most shops seem to stock these, I assume they must have some kind of following.

Re. Montclair, I first saw these jackets in Harrods a few years ago and was immediately impressed with them, although their £500ish price tag is out of my league.

I like Arcteryx, I have a lot of their stuff (jackets, hats, gloves, shirts, harness, ect.) More recently I started getting more Outdoor research gear. Wild Things makes some nice, USA made clothes. And I'm drooling over the NW Alpine Salopette, they look great for hiking, mountaineering, and skiing.

The North Face for me. I like the Summit Series is for the "alpine" fit. I am tall and slim and need an athletic cut stuff. Their stuff fits me great. The Summit Series logo and branding is cool as well.

Yeah I'm a big fan of Mountain Hardwear as well. Same quality as TNF and Patagonia plus I always seem to find good deals on their stuff.
