Got my new Fatboy today. As I prepare for first shave with it, can anyone estimate which blade setting (1-9) is closest to the Merkur 38C Barberpole?

I would guess around a 3 setting on a Fatboy would be close to a 38C. Try 3 that for your first pass and then adjust by the feel from the first pass up or down. I use my Fatboy at 4 or 5 depending upon which blade I am using. I also found the Fatboy has a very different feel from the Merkurs.

I own a Merkur 38C and a purchased it because it compliments my 39C slant razor in terms of appearance. However, it is a milder razor and I generally use it if I feel my face is a little irritated from shaving with the slant and subpar blade, which hasn't happened for quite a while. As you can surmise, it's a relatively mild razor and would probably correspond to a setting of 2 or 3 on your Fatboy. However, the longer handle and greater weight gives it additional shaving power in the right hands, so it is hard to give a direct comparison.
According to the Wiki chart, between 2 and 3 is where the 38C falls for aggressiveness. From my experience, I would have guessed it higher. I have the 38C, the Fatboy, and a 34C. The Wiki shows the 34C as more aggressive than the 38, I don't see much difference. I set my Fatboy at 4 and leave it there regardless of blade choice. As always, YMMV.

Thanks guys. The 3 setting seems about right. Used the Fatboy for first time very cautiously this AM on 3, and on 4 in a couple of areas.

Don't think shorter handle...think more nimble.
I've been rediscovering the FatBoy the last couple weeks....great razor that is fun to drive.
