What's new

Fat Boys need love too!

So I decided to try samplings of razors for a few days, before I go on to "Tech week". Been wanting to try a bunch of these!

Today's choice was the razor from my birth time, a D4 Fat Boy. I took a blade from the sampler (a Gillette 7 O'Clock Sharpedge-second shave, used yesterday in the 1912 Canadian Single Ring). Loaded it up and dialed to 3, closed the doors and let'er rip. Maybe that should read let'er sail. Smooth sailin'. The razor glided along on 4 passes. Not BBS (I don't expect that on a first try with any razor, didn't acheive it in a week of 40's Super Speeds, got it about 4 or 5 out of 7 with an Ever Ready 1912, obviously my technique still needs work- and I know it won't improve as fast switching razors, but I'm having a blast, and can settle for a DFS much of the time ).

Still some stubble after 4 passes, got cheeky, opened the doors and dialed her up to 5. Relatherd the Proraso and went for ATG pass#2. Not brutal, but I managed to cause a bit of irritation on the neck. And didn't do nearly as well on the stubble as I'd hoped (on the neck anyway). Dialed back to three. A bit of touch up later (neck only), and I had an acceptable DFS with just a tiny bit of blood loss.

At 51 years old, this is one of my newer razors. It looks practically new. And I love the weight, the chunky feel of it in my hands. It'll be revisited, and at some point I may do a "week of adjustables" (have a great Slim, and got 2 more Slims and a black base Super Adj. in a lot with the counter display). But for now, I need to decide which razor to try tomorrow...

Below is a before cleaning pic, but it didn't change much with a clean up .

Great post, looks to me like that razor is a keeper.

The fatboy D4 is my birth-year, and "quarter" razor as well. I've managed to acquire three of them now, two are pretty much in like new condition and one is a daily shaver.

I couldn't get a good shave out of this type of razor until I dialed it up to 7 or 8. It was completely counter-intuitive, but it worked. Right now, I get a really fine, two pass shave with a fatboy on 7. If I want BBS, one ATG pass added to the mix and I'm done. No irritation at all. If I try for BBS at 5 or lower, it takes pass after pass after pass and I get nothing but irritation.
