Fallacy!

I know canned goo isn't highly regarded at all, but had anyone ever had any experience with Noxzema medicated for sensitive skin?

My girlfriends father swears by the stuff but I am not sure if I wanted to buy a whole can just for a few shaves.

The title of your post is your best answer.
No doubt, there are mobs of people buying and using the canned stuff, and there is no doubt that it works. Just like driving a Hugo to your destination works, but it is not as enjoyable as a Maserati.
Why do people keep using the Goo and thinking that it is good? I believe it is mainly because they just don't know a better alternative is out there.
I have tried the Noxzema, and countless others in a quest to alleviate the sheer hatred for the tedious chore of shaving that I had to do every day.
It wasn't until I picked up the brush and soap again that I remembered that there is something better, and it had been there all along.

Before thinking this Noxzema stuff can be really good, I would inquire your girlfriend fathers what kind of creams he has used besides this one...has he used shaving creams in tubs like TOBS, Trumpers, T&H...or in tubes such as Proraso, Crabtree & Evelyn... If no, well, I wouldn't put too much value on what he's saying.

In the past, I have used more canned goo brands I care to remember (Edge, Gillette, Barbasol, Nivea, Neutrogena, etc) and I can tell you that nothing beats a high quality shaving cream such as TOBS, Trumpers or C&E.

I'm not saying this Noxzema stuff is totally awful, but I bet it can't be much better or different from any standard canned goos, and it can hardly be better than real shaving cream.

Just for fun, I looked up the ingredients on drugstore.com:

Active Ingredients: Dimethicone

Inactive Ingredients: Water, Stearic Acid, Glycerin, Isobutane, Potassium Hydroxide, Lauramide DEA, Coconut Acid, Propane, Sodium Hydroxide, PVP, Fragrance, FD&C Blue 1

So mostly it's soap and propellant with some fragrance and color... why not just lather some soap for yourself?

I wonder what dimethicone does in this product? Wikipedia says it's used as an anti-foaming agent, which doesn't make much sense unless those propellants work *too* well.

[edit: ah, apparently dimethicone is a good skin lubricant.]

He is 60 and lived in Italy for most of his life, and has always used a brush so I am sure he used a few good products in his day

Well, I used to use a brush and soap and got caught up in the canned goo thing myself, I'm 52.
He just might be making the common mistake of equating "easier" with "better"

That's exactly what it is . He says he won't use the AOS cream my gf got him because it's too much work to whip up lather at 5 AM.

There you go. I will admit it IS easier. But it doesn't take THAT much longer to get a good lather with a brush and soap, and there really is no comparison.
Canned Goo just isn't good for your face, and quite frankly - The older you get, the less you really care about the condition of your skin.

Well the reason I asked is he had the same issues I did with bumps/ ingrowns but his beard is no where near as thick as mine and he insists I buy it. I just wanted to see if there was any experience with it from anyone. :thumbup1:

If you have a minimalist shaving routine, whipping up a lather only takes a couple extra minutes.

I have never understood many men's comments that using a soap and brush is "too much work".

Imagine how exhausted they must be after brushing their teeth or wiping themselves? Wow... that is sooo much work!

I agree with you. It isn't that much longer whipping up a nice lather with a brush.

But these days, it's all about saving a second here and there in our hectic lives. Although I personally allow a few more seconds to shave with a brush and a nice shaving soap or cream, I certainly try to save these seconds at other times during my day and you probably do the same.

We simply have different priorities than the vast majority of men who lament and miserably try to be done as fast as possible with what they perceive as the "chore of shaving"...

Clepping a perfect lather from a triple-milled soap can take a while, but it is a labor of love.

If he is interested in making the task easier and less time consuming, he could try a cream. I can go from zero to nice lather in about 30 seconds with GFT Lime cream. Hard to argue that 30 seconds is too much time, especially when you compare the lather of the GFT Lime with that Sensitive Skin stuff he's currently using.

Gotta admit I'ed rather use a good soap or cream, but if I'm pushed for time I'll grab the yellow can of barbasol and work up some warm lather in my mug. Found it works pretty good and I'm still using my brush. Plus I get warmer lather than you can get from a lather machine.

Just an update, I ended up seeing this stuff on sale for a buck so I figured why the hell not. I shaved with it this morning and I was quite impressed. It gave me a really thick lather and had a minty feel similiar to that of Proraso. I actually got a great shave... Don't burn the heretic!

*soaks his washcloth in Pinaud, ties it to the towel rod, and lights it with his zippo*

BURN HIM!!!

Opinions come and opinions go. When you find something that works for you, that's really the only test anything needs to pass. Happy shaving Bud.
