face lathering brush

I know this is a dumb question because one day I will own all of these, but which of the following do you recommend for daily face lathering? Also, I'm looking to avoid an overly scritchy brush, as one might be able to tell from my choices here...

A Simpson in Best (say a Duke 2), a Rooney Silvertip (I'm thinking a 1/1), or a Shavemac silvertip?

These are all wonderful performers. If I had to vote the best face latherer of the bunch it would be the 1/1.

I'm interested in finding a good face lathering brush too. At the risk of threadjacking, I want to ask, is the Duke 2 a better face latherer than other Simpson brushes, like the Commodore X2 or the Colonel X2?

All Simpsons in Best, all Rooney Silvertips, all Semogues or all Shavemac silvertips?

I have a couple of Simpsons in Best and they are what made me switch from bowl lathering creams to face lathering soaps. However, I have a Semogue Owner's Club boar brush that, once broken in, may be the best face lathering brush I have tried. It does take several weeks to break in properly but you can pick this brush up for less than half the price of any of the others.

no ones mentioned the big omega boar brushes.

the gigantic ones, i got the paint handle type and that is pretty good for face lathering

I just went with the Rooney 1/1 in Super Silvertip. I knew I wanted something more soft than scrubby, so I figured this would be a better choice than Simpson Best.

Hope it won't be too small for me! Guess I can always trade up to 1/2 if it is.

The Rooney Super Silvertip is very comparable to the Simpsons Best. I don't think you'd have been disappointed with the Simpsons, but the Rooney may be a tad less dense (though, still dense as compared to many other brushes).

Okay, I've settled on the Duke for now. Now I'm toying with upgrading to the Duke 3. Choices, choices.

I wouldn't consider that an upgrade, personally.
I bought a Duke 3 and returned it as soon as I received it for a Duke 2!
The knot was much more to my liking and the handle size was much more comfortable.

I believe it. I just compared the specs and can imagine the Duke 3 would be too unwieldy. So...just ordered the Duke 2, yeah!

I'm thinking about getting this exact brush.

Please post after you use it a couple times and give your impressions.

Thanks!

Hunter, speak to me again about the Duke 2 handle size (compared to the T2 and D3). To me it "looks" short and hard to hold. I say "looks" because I haven't handled any of them. Only my Colonel. Thanks!

I got my Rooney 1/1 on Saturday, a mere two days after it shipped out. Here in Hawaii, I've NEVER seen priority mail arrive so quickly before!

This is my first high end brush, and I purchased it largely in order to be able to face lather comfortably. Attempting to face lather with my prickly pure badger brush, even for only 2 minutes or so, results in immediate redness and pain, far worse than anything I've ever gotten as a result of actual shaving. I was hoping the Rooney would be an improvement on that.

Some impressions of the brush:
1) It's pretty small. Not tiny, but certainly looks, well, pocket-sized, when you pull it out of the box. Nevertheless, I don't count this as a negative and think the 1/2 would've been too big for my tastes. It's a highly usable brush.
2) The Rooney has a reputation for being a dense brush with a lot of backbone. It certainly lives up to that reputation. Loads up a lot of soap from a soap puck very quickly, and whips up a nice lather on the face in no time.
3) The hair tips are so soft! Definitely doesn't tear my face up like the pure badger did, and I'm able to face lather very comfortably with it. I can still imagine a brush being softer than this, but I think the balance between stiffness and softness in this brush is just perfect.
4) The brush holds a surprising amount of water (and lather), especially for such a little brush, and the first time I tried to use it, I ended up with an overly wet lather. Not too hard to adjust to, though.

Overall, I feel the recommendations for the Rooney 1/1 as a face lathering brush were well-deserved, and it's a great value at $75. I feel very pleased with my purchase and definitely feel as if I've got my money's worth.

Now I just need a Shavemac and I'll be satisfied. Maybe.

I can only imagine that you will own all three- and probably sooner than you might wish to admit........ Start with the Duke2 in Best- it is a fantastic brush.
