Eyedropping Donts, experience needed

So i seen elsewhere bad things can happen when you eyedrop a metal pen,... uh what happens and does anyone have any pictures so i dont have to find out myself (im guessing i will anyway), and is there any other Dont Do's one should be aware of before hand,.. im all good with finding things out the hard way and then posting about it,... but i dont actually do it on purpose,.. unless i know something cool is going ot happen that is,... but im sure most people would prefer to avoid trouble before it happens

Don't eyedropper an aluminum pen, the ink reacts with the metal in a bad way. Other than that, for a plastic pen, just have an o-ring to seal the threads and use some regular ol' silicone grease on the threads to make an even better seal. It is also a good idea to not fill the body completely with ink (on the flip side, remember to refill it before it gets too empty) as the heat from your fingers can work on the air trapped inside the pen and make it burp, thereby increasing the odds of painting your cat! :001_tt2:

The chemicals in the ink corrode the aluminum. So i assume the inside gets all pitted, and the ink gets sludgy and gums up the feed and the nib, etc...

can one of these aluminum pens be had for say 5 dollars shipped ?,... im just a bit curious, i have laundry to do later lol

I'm out of my depth on that one, the cheapest eyedropper I know are the Platinum Preppies at Goulet, but they are all plastic. Someone else will have to help you with your sick and twisted experiment, James :tongue_sm

As has been said, don't eye dropper a metal pen due to corrosion. As to O airings, I don't think they are necessary. My Parker Reflex only has silicone grease on the threads andi have never had a leak.

Jim you are a sick pup. It has always been said do not eyedropper a metal pen. The older inks were very corrosive. Modern day inks are are not as corrosive buy I have had Bay State Blue entirely eat the feed out of a parker 45, and lots of people said it did the same to Lamys.

Back to the metal. Personally I will not put my metal bodied pens to the test just to get a few more drops of ink in the barrel.

Of course if you are as crazy as you appear you could always eyedropper the FC essential. And when it starts leaking ink and the body falls apart, you can take one for the team and and tell us all about it :biggrin1:

I've eyedroppered (is that a word?) several pens including a Kaweco Sport and a few inexpensive Indian pens and never used anything other than a little silicone grease. No O-rings and no leaks!

Lol well I get curious sure everybody knows not to do it... but sometimes most don't know why, and even if they do have never actually seen something happen for ten dollar pen it would be worth the experiment plus next time somebody asked why you'd have a link to show them lol I may be sick but only for educational purposes

Really, it's an exercise in futility. Eyedroppering a metal pen just to see it melt seems uninformative and pointless, and ...

... wait a minute. Look who I'm talking to.

They do? Maybe we should test that too lol... besides Ian I would have thought you'd be the first in line to watch that happen to a Chinese pen

...If only TWSBIs came in aluminum,.. i would never had to have asked the question, he would already have the pictures, plus what happens when you try to write with gasoline,... back your car over it,... and light a match

Here is a good one- I decided to eyedropper a Parker Reflex. So there I am, putting ink in the body and wondering "how much does this thing hold?". Well, the end caps on the Reflex are just snap in deals and are not airtight. I had a nice blob of ink on my desk. So, pulled the end cap, applied expoxy, and popped it back in. It has been good since.

Moral of the story- check for leaks with water first.

Sounds similar to the "tried to eyedropper a Plumix" stories. Sometimes the end has a hole in it, sometimes it doesn't
