I don't think it's as huge a deal as they're making it out to be. To get those kind of speeds (Mach 20+ I believe) you need to launch it from mach 9+ (assuming it's a Ramjet of course). From what I gather it's a pretty simple concept that just takes a lot of money to play around with.

usualy when a craft reenters the atmosphere theres a 5 minute radio silence due to ionization against the hull of the craft,
its also one of the most critical parts of reentery where a wrong angle or a damaged heatshield can easly break apart or even vaporize a craft,

my opinion ? it had a crack in the heatshield or got caught in the atmosphere and the biggest piece of probobly the size of a key chain,

on the other hand, "losing contact" with it is a easy excuse to keep it in orbit for later use, you use it as a weapon and then claim the strike was caused by a rouge satelite which fell out of orbit,
