Expensive

I've been smoking about a cigar or two a week since I last posted in this forum a month or so ago about what cigars to buy.

In an effort to cut costs a bit (been smoking a lot of cubans), I decided to poke around and see what cheaper cigars there are.

Went to my smoke shop today and made some purchases.

That led me to compare prices between Canada and the US.

I bought a cigar today for $7 that I've read costs $1.50 south of the border.

So my question is for those of you in Canada, is there a cheaper way to go about this hobby?

We have plenty of your Canadian brothers in this forum, hopefully they come around and can answer this for you!

Order from the states... once in a while you may be nabbed by customs for a charge, but so far all my orders have gone right past them, without any extra charges

Other then that your stuck with canadian taxes, or bugging friends tp grab you a box while on vacation...

Unfortunately that then rules out cubans for you, but there are lots of great cigars from other areas

Syngent -- have you ever ordered from, say, cigar chief? I've read a bit about it.

I may order some cheapies from the states... just to test the water.

I started this thread last week where I asked essentially the same question. Looks like Atlantic Cigar and cigarplaceDOTbiz are two of the best U.S. online options for Canadians but check the rest of the thread for other suggestions. I've yet to make a purchase from any of them but am pretty close after dropping $63 for only four cigars at my B&M yesterday... the same four would have cost me about $25 from these online places.

Thanks! Should have searched harder.

I'm curious to hear about your ordering experience when you eventually do. A quick scan around Atlantic Cigar was a fair bit of fun.

No worries, sir. Unlike other forums here, we don't bring out the pitchforks and torches for commonly asked questions! :biggrin1:

Yeah, we're here to help (and encourage lots of purchasing and picture taking and posting of those purchases). I'd also be curious to here about any online cigar purchases you happen to make in the future. Good luck!

A good cigar should be kept in a humidor and smoked within a day or so of purchasing, if ordering them, then one must have a humidor at home.

If you have a humidor, why the need for smoking within a day ?, once in the humidor won't it keep the cigar for a long time ?

I can smoke fast but 25 cigars in a day would be a monumental task for even me lol

I think there might be a mix up in his post? I THINK he means that you have to smoke them within one to two days of purchasing if you don't have a humidor. And if you are ordering online, then you should have a humidor at home.

BTW I have kept cigars in a well regulated humidor for yearssssss and the time actually turns the cigar different if compared to one that was smoked without aging.

Thats what I thought,... Was just making sure

Yeah I'll definitely be getting a humidor. I'm in the process of moving which is delaying my newfound hobby.

Box of cigars from the civil war era - still good to smoke because they've been stored properly all these years :)

Cigarplace.biz has great selection and pricing. Canadiancigarforum.com is another forum I'm on under the same name, a lot of guys do box splits, trades, and discussions about finding cigars, I would look them up too!

There is also an alternative to expensive cigars... Pipes, a corn cob pipe, pouch of tobacco, a pipe tool, pipe cleaners, and matches will cost you under $40.

Happy Smoking!

Funny you should say that Hunter because I had my first good bowl this week. There have been about 15 since I picked it up a while ago.. but this one was truly quite nice.

Yup. As long as you keep the RH (real humidity) between 60% and 70% they'll be good as long as you store them. Less than 60% the cigar burns hot/harsh and loses flavor. Over 70% is too wet and will go out constantly, burn harsh, and you risk a mold outbreak.

I find that cigars delivered need to sit in the humidor and acclimate for a minimum of 2-4 weeks depending on how wet they are when they arrive. Personally I like to let 'em rest for about 2 months at 62%.
