Exfoliating

doctordial

my brain goes "thonk"
I was told by a sles person in a AOS store that if I exfoliated my face not to shave or shave th next day because I would be exfoliating twice using a brush or over exfoliating. I would like to get some opinions on this or weigh ins 0n this.

Everyone's skin is different. I myself find what works best for me is if I use an exfoliator I usually use it on the days that I don't shave. I really don't think it is a problem shaving the next day if you did use use an exfoliator the day before. Also, it would depend on whether you face lather or not. Because I bowl lather it doesn't make such a huge difference for me as I have used an exfoliator lightly on a shaving day before with no negative consequences. Also, the factor of how sensitive your particular skin is would play into it.

I have often heard it said around here that whatever they say at that AOS store is to be "taken with a grain of salt..."

I haven't had any issues exfoliating on days that I shave. I do "mechanical" exfoliation (i.e. a wash product that has mild abrasive particles in it) rather than chemical exfoliation, and I limit it to 2 or 3 times a week at most.

There's different ways of exfoliating. It depends your method of exfoliating whether you can shave or not. I use a toothbrush to wash my face BEFORE I shave which is a form of exfoliating (they sell exfoliating brushes in the store, but I just use an old toothbrush), then shaving itself is a form of exfoliating, after shave I use a homemade aspirin mask which is a 3rd form of exfoliating. After the shave I do use moisturizer but my skin isn't hardly overly dry. All that being said I have oily skin.

Shaving alone is a great exfoliator. Take it easy on your skin and lay off the chemicals.

+1 on this. Especially where a straight razor is involved :)

I always exfoliate the night before a morning shave, so about twelve hours before. So far have been using L'Occitane's Juniper Bark scrub, but now I am told this is discontinued I need to find something else :cursing:

Indeed shaving / brushing is a way to exfoliate the skin (especially if the brush hairs are hard).

I use a face wash that has micro-exfoliationg powders in it. So it's not harsh and can be used everyday, even before a shave.

+1. Shaving is exfoliation. No need to do more. It would likely have no measurable benefit but a big downside.

I do exfoliate 2-3 times a week on the areas I DON'T shave, (Forehead, T-zone, etc) with the old fashioned apricot scrub.

Have they discontinued this? I have a few stocked up, but I like the Bath House facial scrub a lot at the moment: http://www.thebathhouseshop.com/men...tmeg/spanish-fig-and-nutmeg-facial-scrub.html

Nivea face scrub every other day.

I think the easiest way to answer your question is this....AOS employees are just plain ignorant. I was recently at an AOS store and when I mentioned DE razors to the staff they looked at me like I was nuts and asked if I would like to "upgrade" to a Gillette Proglide! :cursing:
AOS is owned by Procter & Gamble (parent company of Gillette) so many of the employees will say/do anything to push their profits up. In the end however, it just pushes informed consumers away.

Yep, looks like it is. I got the same response from two SAs in two different stores here in the UK.

Thanks A LOT for the suggestion, I'll need to investigate this brand a lot more. Are they a UK company? I've heard of them but never got the chance to try out their products.

Hahahahahaha!!!!
Why doesn't this surprise me? Most SAs are muppets when it comes to skincare and shaving! No offence due or anything but I just don't feel they are as passionate about these products/methods as much as we are.

As usual... YMMV.

I shower using "scrubbie gloves" as SWMBO calls them.
Body, face, and head.

No problems scrubbing and shaving every day.

I have been wanting to get an exfoliating face wash. Lately I've just been using an exfoliating wash cloth. It has a nice feel to it.

Have any of your tried those cheap handheld exfoliating bristles that spin?

Yes, I believe they are a UK company. Certainly seems to be readily available from the usual UK vendors as well.

I had a look online and you can order from them direct or via Connaught. Hmm.... looks like I might just dive for this one. Is it drying to your skin by any chance? Going to see if I can get a sample, otherwise I might just go ahead and order a pot.

Don't find it drying at all...and dare I say I think it makes for a better prep as well. Something about the olive ingredients in it I think.
