Evolution of the Tech razor

In another thread was the question about different head types from Tech razors. I have make some pictures for example. I know it´s not complete (missing plastic head, hollow handle, short travel handle or 2-piece handle) but these are the most common variants. Here´s the same picture in big size

great post !! A nice visial history of the Tech. I have a gold "fluted" handled tech, looks like the black WWII one, but in gold, and a plastic handled, plastic middle bit, but metal top bit one if you would like more pics.

many thanks, but I´ve this one too. My picture is only a example - it gives many more matches.

Very nice! I like to collect Techs more than shave with them, but I find I prefer the British models more as they seem to shave a bit more aggressively -- unless I'm just imagining things.

Beautiful work Achim.

And it's so helpful to have them arranged in one photo for easy viewing.

Now, any comments regarding the head aggressiveness? I tried 3 head types and here they are in order from most aggressive to least, based on my perception:

1) Travel Tech head from 1973, with Gillette block type logo on head
2) No date code head with triangular slots on back plate (fat handle), no logo
3) Head with diamond logo (from 1957 ball end model)

I tried them all with the same fat handle (which is the style I like), so the handle was not a variable in my test.

I also tried a Feather Portable head with the same fat handle and it was the most aggressive of them all. That's a nice Tech clone that can still be found NOS.

Great pictures-- I prefer the '38 series silver fat handle Techs. I have one of those and it's a reliable shaver. It seems a bit more aggressive to me than the later Techs but is still pretty mild. It's one of the few razors that I know I can pick up and won't burn myself, even if I'm in a bit of a rush.

I read your review and the travel tech head that I use also has a flat profile lower plate maybe that's I why I sense it slightly more aggressive.

Great job, Achim. For me the Tech has been my least collected razor. This now gives me something to shoot for. Many thanks.

Is it possible to date razors by the (curve or lack of it) on the lower plate ? I made the assumption that the flat type was old, but in looking at the 1966 tech, it has the same flat lower plate as the 38-45 types. How many years was the fat handled tech made in gold ? The 46-50 one you show has the curved lower plate, I have one with a flat lower plate, no date codes. I noticed that the weight on two seperate razors was very different, one was 40g another was 52g. How definitive is weight in determining what a razor is ?

Also, the 1951 Canadian tech shown has a date code. The "Made in Canada" one I have, has no date code. Was there a range of these with no date codes ? It does have the 1932 date. Is it just "pre-1950" ?

Thanks for any help on this ...

+1. Using the psycho made me want try another Tech, but I wasn't sure what the differences were until now.
