What's new

Ever wear a cheap scent...

that is just perfect for you? I don't have a deep collection but I do have about 5 scents that I've collected and continued to use over the years that I enjoy. After reading so much on the forum I recently spent about 40 minutes at a mall's fragrance shop searching for a new scent.

I didn't have any specific scent in mind and as usual my only guide line was to stay away from the normal fare you can buy at Macy's, with the matching jean or hand bag brand names. My request, so that I would stay clear of the "brand name" scent mentality, to the counter-girl was to suggest to me scent's and brands that people don't usually buy from her.

Long story short I chose a cheap EDP on a whim. And I've absolutely fallen in love with it. Everyone from my 82 year old Aunt to my 16 year old niece has given me unsolicited compliments. I was at Restaurant supply depot walking through a walkin cooler the size of walmart and a very attractive older lady stopped me to ask what I was wearing.

I'm not saying this is the best scent, but it really works well for me and I feel incredible when I walk through a room knowing heads turn. Guys have asked me what I'm wearing and when I tell them, they have no idea what I'm talking about because they can't associate it to a name brand.

I'm not a snob, but I'm not one for cheap things either. I'm so surprised that I found something by accident that works so well. The scent is Black Knight Extreme. I'm not trying to advertise it, but I'm sure people will be wondering.

So I'm asking all you aficionado's. How often if ever, do you find a cheap scent that is every bit as worthy as something costing 4 or 5 times if not more? Does the cost of your scent make you feel different? I'll admit that my attitude is affected by my chosen scent and it's cost, however shallow that sounds. That doesn't hold true for me with this new scent. I feel like a fresh mint gold bullion.

I know that not all cheap scents are good but now I'm wondering if I should have given more of them a try rather then basing my judgment on quality from their price tag.

This isn't intended to be a "smash the expensive" type of post, god knows I enjoy my pricey perfum too.

Yep. I think the alternative too is spending a lot on a scent that does NOT work for you. I've found a lot of older scents you find at your TJ Maxx and Marshalls are great on me.

Yes. Over the years I've seen several newspaper articles that tested how much men and women like certain scents on the opposite sex. Many of the inexpensive aftershaves come out on top again and again. Oh . . . it turns out men really like women to smell like vanilla . . . I'm not sure it that means we like cookies more than tarts.

I tend to wear more of the higher end niche fragrances most of the time. I don't really think price has anything to do with it, but I feel the need to wear something that is elusive in the sense that there are a lot of people that haven't heard of it or can't associate it with a "mainstream" department store brand as you put it.

That being said, "cheap" is a very subjective term. To some it means $5-10 a bottle, to others anything under say $60 is on the cheap side.

I am willing to try just about anything and will wear what I like regardless of price. I don't wear something just because of a hefty price tag, but I do typically shop the higher end counters simply due to looking for something unique that 5 other guys in my office aren't going to be wearing at the same time I do. :thumbup1:

I pretty much refuse to shop mainstream department store counters because of that very reason. So I guess I am not really a price snob, but definitely a "want to wear something unique that my colleagues are not wearing" snob. :001_smile

speaking of cheap...I like Clubman...my lady friend likes it as well(lucky me, I know it isnt always the case) but I was at the Dollar Store the other day and took a whiff of something called Classic Splash...and it smelled just like Clubman and was only a buck and a half for a 10 ounce(I think) bottle...didnt buy it since I have enough to last me right now, but go figure...

I stumbled into the dollar tree and found the "cheap" dollar cologne knock offs, and i found Swiss Army cologne knock off, and to tell u the truth I got more compliments on that scent then alot of my name brand scents, even the original Swiss army which i bought after loving the smell of the other.

In the cheap scent category, more of the traditionalists in here should check out a scent called PS by Paul Sebastian.

It can be found from $20-$30. I got mine at CVS for like $28.

It is an 80s scent that is quite similar in many people's mind to Old Spice.
But, and this is a big one for me, it's a bit more potent with a lot better longevity.

The more I dig into the fragrance world, the more I've come to find that price means practically nothing. If a scent is expensive and I love it, I'll buy it; if it's cheap and I love it, I'll buy...lots of it

My favorites range all the way from Creed Royal English Leather and Tom Ford Amber Absolute to Aqua Velva Musk and the Clubman line.

Currently, my favorite "cheapies" include Pino Silvestre, Pinaud Clubman Musk and Ogallala Bay Rum & Sandalwood.

I've seen PS available for even less in the Marshalls/TJ Maxx discount stores. I just picked up a one ounce spray bottle for $5.00 at my local Big Lots store. I haven't worn it yet, but a sample sprayed on my wrist was very interesting...pleasant and certainly long-lasting!

The thing with the cheap one mainly the knock off is that I put it on and it has faded away 2-3 hours later. I have found ones that I like and do last. I guess that is what makes the difference between cheap and inexpensive.

After some recent reflection on my fragrance hobby, I've discovered that my favorites are the inexpensive ones: those mentioned in this thread already plus English Leather, Tabac and other similar scents. This style of fragrances fits me really well.

I've used this a couple of times over the past 25 years. I remember this one being a top dollar cologne back in 89 at upscale department stores.

Currently, my favorite "cheapies" include Pino Silvestre, Pinaud Clubman Musk and Ogallala Bay Rum & Sandalwood.

Pino Silvestre has been on my dresser since I was a young boy. My great grandfather, grandfather and uncles used to use this in italy back in the 50's. My grandfather used to bathe in it according to my mom. It was gifted to me as my first cologne and has remained in rotation since then.

Maybe its important to recognize cologns that are inexpensive due to the longevity the product has been sold as opposed to cheap due to the quality of the scent.

Old Spice
Brut
Pierre Cardin
English Leather
Aqua Velva Musk (hey, it's an aftershave/cologne)

Wanna get some Jovan Musk for men and Paul Sebastian!

I think it would be interesting to do a large-scale blind scent test, with a large group sampling a large group of scents ranging from very inexpensive to very expensive, and see how the preferences shake out without regard to price or brand.
