Ever-Ready

Just discovered that a razor I was given by my Mother years ago as an antique is probably a 1924 Ever-Ready travel model. It is in a small, unlined gold colored case with the logo missing. It is loaded with a single-edge Radio Steel blade. There is a slight bit of rust on the razor and the blade. Holding it against my face it seems so mild as to feel like there is no blade in it at all (even though I'm sure the blade is very dull). Now that I rediscovered it, what do I do with it!! Clean of the rust with ?? Load it with what blade? Is it valuable enough to not use it all? Will have to ask my Mother, but perhaps it was my Father's. Thanks, John

John,

I think the GEM blades sold by Ted Pella as PTFE coated are the best to use with any GEM/EverReady/Star razor.

I always get a great shave with them.

In the short term, you can get a package of Personna Gem Super Stainless blades at a Walgreens. Looks like this:

These have worked well for me.

Gems are excellent shavers when used with a good blade. Give this razor a good scrubbing and the rust will probably come right off. Maybe a little Flitz polish to shine it up, then drop in a fresh blade, prep your beard and go for it.

Start with a very low angle, the razor almost flat to your face and then tilt it out until you start to hear the hairs popping. You'll find the sweet spot soon enough. Grip way up near the head, in the little narrowed bit of the handle, just pinching between your thumb and forefinger. No pressure on your face, this thing has quite a bit of exposed blade!

You've got a great razor there, make the most of it. +1 on the good PTFE coated stainless blades. They're the way to go.

Just pulled the old blade out, cleaned the little rust caused by the old blade off with toothpaste, and put a new Gem blade in. Wow!! Yes, a LOT of the blade is exposed!! Not sure I really want to try it, but perhaps one of these weekends I will just to see if I can shave without butchering myself. Wish me luck!! John

I know the feeling well. An open comb Micromatic was my starter razor and the first few shaves scared the crap out of me. No worries though, even on my worst days, I don't think I got anything more serious than the occassional nick. Take your time, don't bear down on the blade (and I mean at all) and you'll be fine. FWIW, I'm now probably one of the worlds biggest Gemocrats and only occassionally don't use SE razors.
