What's new

Erskine 3005

I’ve had this brush for about a year and a half.

Overall, the handle is in good condition. One drawback. . . .the upper portion of the handle had a groove around the entire circumference (approx ¼” above the top of the Acrylic). When I drilled the knot out, it was somewhat obvious where the groove came from. The knot was set in rubber, so I assume the rubber or the filler was too hot or there was some sort of chemical reaction and it buckled the shell. The groove wasn't super bad, but bad enough you could see it. I wish the branding on the base was complete. . . . .most of the “SET IN RUBBER” stamp is MIA.

The particulars when it arrived. . . .

Overall height: 118.94mm
Handle height = 65.37mm
Loft height = 53.57mm
Knot size [hair diameter at base] = 20.96mm
Grip ring [narrow part of handle] = 19.86mm
Base of handle = 34.5mm
Weight: 1.9 oz or 54g

Knot removal. . . .

The new knot. . . .a TGN 24mm Super Finest, so had to open the knot hole.

Due to the groove in the upper portion of the handle, it took a substantial amount of sanding. Began with 240 and worked my way up to 3000. I started the lower portion at 600 and finished with 3000. The branding stamp(s) on the base of the handle are light, so I took it fairly easy during the sanding/polishing – using 2000 and 3000. I’m not sure if I’m going to paint the branding.

A little spit and polish. . . . .

Knot set. . . .

Post-bloom. . . . .

Final measurements. . . .

Overall height: 111.57mm
Handle height = 64.55mm
Loft height = 47mm
Knot size [hair diameter at base] = 26mm (TGN 24mm 2-Band Super Finest)
Grip ring [narrow part of handle] = 19.86mm
Base of handle = 35.5mm
Weight: 2.3 oz or 65g

Gorgeous handle. Knot looks like it is hidden down in there. Just too low a loft for my tastes. How is it though? Looks like it may bloom more?

The last pic was the initial post-bloom. First actual use was today. Did well in loading, building lather, and not a lather hog. I played with the loft before making a final decision (at 47, 48, 49, and 50mm). This is TGN's new Super Finest, which has less backbone than the XH Finest (At least to me - I've restored 11 brushes with their XH Finest). 49 - 50mm is my usual loft preference using XH Finest. The tips on the Super is also softer. I think it will bloom a tad more.

Please allow me a moment to wipe the drool off my chin....

okay, now I can say - Awesome work!! Love the clarity of the bottom part of the handle and the knot aesthetics are just awesome!! Great job as always my friend!!

I have an Erskine 3001 that I restored last year. Similar except a little shorter and has a eight-sided base. I stuck a Swiss half-Franc coin at the base of the knot so it shows through the bottom. It's got a a 20mm TGN XH Finest Badger knot.
