English Leather Question

I've noticed that there is English Leather made by Dana and by Mem. Did one precede the other, or were they both made at the same time? Are they the same scent, or different? Finally, I've seen Dana English Leather AS in two different packaging. One is a brown box with a red saddle in the middle and the saddle has some white lines across it. The other is a partly brown box with a yellow label with no white lines near the saddle. Again, did one of these precede the other? Are these two the same scent?

I am curious as well, I have only seen the English Leather in Timber/Black variations. Did you see the different packaging in person at a retailer or online merchant?

English Leather was originally made by Mem beginning in 1949. When they stopped producing it Dana bought the product name.

I took a chance, and now have a 4 oz bottle of Mem English Leather A/S on its way to me. I was thinking of splitting in half leaving one as is and adding some Lime EO to the other half. Any thoughts on that? Would it be ruining something that can't be improved? I got the idea because while looking I saw EL Lime. So I know that at one time they gave it a try.

My advice would be not to alter the MEM English Leather. I have the vintage MEM that was made in new Jersey and is called 'All Purpose Lotion'. And it smells absolutely wonderful and you will enjoy it just as it is. However, I also purchase the modern formula fro DANA in both AS and Cologne and will put Lime EO or other branded lime cologne in it. The formula is changed and quite different than the original. In fact, if you read the bottle of the modern DANA stuff, it will say that the essential oil is from U.S.A. but that it is formulated in China.

Covet that MEM- it has (I think) a far superior odor to the DANA version. Although I still like the Dana enough to wear it.

OK. I'll keep it pristine - at least most of it. But I do see bottles of vintage MEM Lime English Leather on the web. And I do love Lime scented products. And I know that the lime component of any product fades quickly and you're left with the base scent. So that would give me a quick post-shave hit of Lime and likely still leave the EL scent after the lime fades. I think I'm talking myself into maybe trying to mix up just a half ounce or so.

At some point in the past there must have been people out there buying EL Lime since there are still bottles available, and at prices that are wayyy higher than regular EL.

The current formulation really doesn't smell the way it should. When first applied, it is very wrong, and too strong. I'll try it diluted with WH next time, to see if that helps any. As was, I washed it back off without waiting to see what it smells like after a period of waiting (and maybe that will come sooner in a diluted dose).
