Electronic Cigarettes?

These have been a while, but I just heard about them today. Are these things for real? Has anyone ever used one?

I haven't tried them, but I've just started my umpteenth attempt at quitting.

I've tried using the gum, the patch, the pills, the subliminal recordings, the substitute-snapping-rubberband-on-your-wrist-when-you-want-a-cig, the cold-turkey method ... nothing has worked.

This time around, I'm trying magnet therapy, a product from www.zerosmoke.org ... it works on the acupuncture point related to smoking, which is the fold of your ear-flap. Don't ask me to explain it, I don't understand it either, I just take it on faith that it is the correct place to put these magnets.

I've been at it for 3 days now ... it seems to be working. When I wear the magnets, I notice an immediate increase in deeper breathing. My desire to smoke is decreased. When I do light up, my nic-fix need is often satisfied after just a 2 or 3 puffs, and if I often put out a cigarette before I even smoke it half-way. The smoke itself doesn't taste as good as it did before.

The magnets start to hurt after you've worn them for 2 hours or so, but that's normal. The effectiveness seems to last even after you take them off.

BTW, My motivation to quit is purely economic ... with the increase in taxes, I just can't afford to spend close to $200 a month on tobacco any more. I even went back to rollng my own for a while, but even the cost of bulk tobacco has sky-rocketed far beyond what I can afford.

They literally have coffee flavor inserts for the electronic cigarettes. They never come out and sat it, but they imply that these electronic cigs are safer... I couldn't tell how.

Since there is no smoke, I would have to agree they would be safer. From the info I've found, they use an atomizer that combines liquidified nicotine and water and this "smoke" is inhaled. It doesn't have tar or a flame.

you can et a cheap one to try it out from dealextreme, then if you like it, get the real thing,

but at some point, it became ridiculous for me, and i quit,

Nicotene is water solube. Inhaling from the atomoisers like breatihng in the vapour of a cologone bottle filled with h20 and nicotene. The amount of toxins and carcinogens ingested asied from the nicotene are nil. No tar, c0, chemicals that put a cigartte out if its not puffed on for 30 seconds, glue, papaer, burning, ash smoke etc etc.

I'm worried about the flavour, aromatic compounds aren't the safest things out there.

Less detrimental to you though. The 0mg nicotene cartirdges look promising. I might fuddle around with one out of curisoosity come september.

They're a great alternative for some folks if you're trying to quit smoking. Some people have a hard time seperating themselves from the hand-to-mouth act of smoking despite recieving nicotine from a patch or gum. The E-cig deliberately adresses this problem. Having said that, it just didn't work for me. I found another alternative.

From what I've read, it hasn't been studied fully. But my view is: do anything that works. Putting smoke in your lungs is bad for you. Quitting was very difficult for me; I wish I had had more options on my first few tries.

I just wonder if this is addictive because substituting real cigarette addiction for e-cigarette addiction doesn't seem like a great idea for those trying to kick the habit.

Guys - thanks for revealing to me that I did in fact possess more willpower than I thought when I quit nearly 20 years ago.

How I did it: I worked my way down to the weakest cigarettes available - the sort that you need to have a poultice on the back of your neck to get a hit from. Then I bought a ten pack of the strongest unfiltered I could lay hands on. When I got "the need" I'd light one of these ubercigarettes up and the idea was to smoke it in one.

Man did I spew and feel really quite ill... 6 months later I threw the remaining 9 out and I've not smoked since.

I quit in 1975 or 1976 after after 10 years of smoking.

It was incredibly hard to do. I basically did cold turkey with some preparation. Here is what I did, in order:

  • Smoked strong specialty cigarettes I could only get mail order. I think the brand was Sherman's. They were long and had no filters. They would go out if not puffed on. My theory was that I was addicted to the nicotine but it was the tars that were harmful so getting as much nicotine with as little tar as possible was a good first step. This immediately cut way down on the number of cigarettes I smoked each day.

I actually did this before I contemplated quitting completely and was on this kick for some time. They were extremely good cigarettes. If you are going to smoke I recommend them highly! A quick Google shows that they are still available.
  • Did everything I could to develop a self image of myself as someone who did not smoke. Hypnotism might have worked well here, but I "brute forced" it, constantly comparing myself to smokers and non-smokers and which showed the most character, self knowledge and self control. What kind of person was I deep inside? What kind did I want to be? I compared smoking to heroin addiction an observed its effects on me and on others. Not pretty when looked at objectively.
  • Went for a week long hike into the Sierra Mountains without taking any cigarettes with me. Walk in. Walk out. Non-stop. I believe the physical exertion helped mentally and physically.
The cold turkey worked -- no more physical addiction, but the psychological habit -- the need to do something with my hands and mouth -- took some additional time and will power.

Congratulations to all of you successful, driven gents! Smoking is one psycho ex that is very hard to get away from.
These vaporizer-type things may make it safer for people around those who smoke. That's a good thing. Second-hand smoke doesn't do anybody any good. I'm not so sure they're a good quitting aid, either. Kind of like trying to cure powdered meth addiction with the purer, more concentrated crystal. Not that there's any comparison between smoking and meth use, just an example.

I quit smoking as well. Here are some tips:

People, Places, and Things: Avoid people, places, and things that enable to or remind you of smoking. Spend time with people who don’t like smoking, stay away from places where lots of smoking takes place.

Keep yourself busy: Idol hands are the devil’s playthings, so they say, but it makes sense here. The more bored you are the more you’re going to want to have a smoke. Do something, preferably something that requires both hands (High-action videogames kept me busy for a long time during this period).

Something that “helped” me, though I wouldn’t recommend it: my decision to quit smoking fell up on a stretch of holidays, so my friends and coworkers were constantly have drinking parties, and I was obliged to attend. While I was hung over the next day, the very idea of having a cigarette made me sick.

Nearly dying did the trick for me. When I was...22, I think, I came down with a case of bronchitis that was so bad, I was convinced that if I had a cigarette, it would do me in. After five days of being sick as a dog, I finally felt well enough to contemplate a smoke. I decided to see if I could put it off until the following day. I continued doing that until I had a month behind me.

Could I have done it without those first five miserable days? I don't know.

My wife and I stopped smoking last year by switching to e-cigs. Neither of us wanted to quit but the cost was prohibitive and FSC cigs tasted awful and made us both cough.

I guess they do not work for everyone but they have sure made flying more pleasurable. Being able to "smoke" while en route to London (from NY) was a blessing.

I realized I was addicted to nicotine and had an oral fixation so I bought a cheap starter product and found it very satisfying. If you want to learn more about the experience visit the e-cigarette forum. There are excellent reviews of various "cigarettes" and juices.

If it works for any of you, pass the word. I try to convert every smoker I can. I could not stomach a real tobacco product now.

Why would you think that? Go to the forum and view available products and user reviews. I never wanted to quit and e-cigs provided a "healthier" alternative. I get my fix and no longer cough or smell.

In the scheme of things, I was made to feel like a pariah because I smoked. Can you imagine what would happen to the US economy if all smokers quit buying at once?

I went to an Eric Clapton concert a few years ago. He has kicked heroin and cocaine. He still smokes Marlboro Reds. I understand this. Good thing he is rich, otherwise he may be using mainline nicotine, and his teeth fall out of his gums.

Not good for the image, IMHO.
