EJ DE89 Question

I am considering one of these guys. However, the handle looks smooth as can be. Does any of you guy have trouble gripping this razor?

I do, and bought a Muhle R-89 to take its place.

I am going to give the EJ to my son.
I should have probably bought the EJ that has the chrome plated and lined handle. I think it might give a firmer grip.
Others do not have this problem, so it is something in my technique, probably my periodic rinsing the whole razor during the shave.

Oh well, live and learn.

Oh no! Conflicting opinions. I too rinse more often than most. I also have large hands and don't want slippery times.

Any advice as to where I can get the lined version other than from the aforementioned link?

Thanks,

I purchased my EJ DE89L from Amazon.com. $34 with free "super saver" shipping. It's a sweet razor...highly recommended! :thumbup1:

I own the DE86 version of the blade and never had an issue holding it. However, it it the faux ebony version, which has different grip characteristics. I do own a number of smooth chrome handled razors and do not have issues gripping them either.

Since I know who's you're looking at buying  I'll just say that between the ivory, ebony, and un-lined chrome version, I've never had any slipping issues.

I have the lined version (DE89L) and don't have a problem. If you are at all concerned go with the L for a couple of extra bucks. It's a great razor!

I've had no problems using the 89L but those thin shallow lines probably aren't going to help if you have serious grip issues. The Muhle 89 has the same head and more functional knurling, but it comes with a heftier tag to match. From what I understand the balance is also slightly different (in the EJ's favor).

Pay attention to your next shave: how slippery is your grip, really?

+1. I own the same razor and haven't had any issues with it slipping.

I use my EJ 89 100% of the time at home. (I use a SS when I travel). And I love the razor. I liked the lined handle that came with it, but I did find it to be a bit too slippery when wet. While I never had the razor slip on me, I did find that I was spending a lot of time drying my hands when I was shaving. I solved this problem when I bought an "Improved" handle from Cooncatbob. Once I put that handle with my EJ head, I found shaving nirvana for me.

I love the razor. So, I will always encourage others to give it a try.

I found the smooth handle a little slippery, especially when using a slick cream like Cremo. However, it was the length and relative weight of the handle that did it in for me. I replaced it with a Cooncatbob knurled, ultra-lite, XL, black aluminum handle and haven't looked back. It's a perfect shaver (for me) with that handle and loaded with a fresh Feather or 7 o'clock Yellow.
