Edwin jagger best badger brush

Hi guys
i have just recieved my edwin jagger best badger brush,
And upon using it for the first time today lathering with edwin jagger aloe soap,
I have noticed that it smells really bad almost like harmonia,
With this being my first badge brush (only had boar in the past )
Is this normal for it to be like this

Thanks

Liam

Hey Liam,

You do sometimes get a 'funk' with brushes at first use. That's why some blokes tend to give brushes a good ol' soak & wash-up with a strongly scented soap/cream upon delivery and prior to first shave use.

Boars tend to be worse than badgers.

I've had a lot of smell from a DR Harris badger brush, but not from Simpsons, Omega or Shavemac badger brushes. The DR Harris funk is just slowly going away even after I had it soaked and washed a dozen times before I first used it.

I actually like doing the break in period on new brushes. It helps me get through older and less desired soaps! My experience shows that the funk is really related to some of the natural oils still in the hair. Do the following:

1. Wet brush with nice relatively hot water.
2. Lather up in the palm.
3. Turn on the handle flat side and let sit for 10 mins.
4. Rinse all soap out and wring with hand.
5. Shake out all of the water out of the brush.
6. Most important part....while the brush I'd still slightly damp, brush the tips and the interior of the bristles, carefully, with a very dry clean towel. This will pull some of those oils into the towel and off the brush. Smell the towel after doing this and you will see what I mean.
7. The brush will be almost dry at this point. If you are in a hurry, repeat this process again, or I prefer to allow the brush to hang until it is fully dry.

even the worst funk boar brushes I've had get unfunky after doing this about a dozen times. Remember that this will not dry the bristles out as eventually regular use with good quality soaps will keep the hairs hydrated and not brittle.

Enjoy the break in process. It is actually part of the fun of a new brush!

+1 I just did a similar process to this with a new brush.
