Educate me about Knots

Looking to order on sale, not sure of what Knot Shape, Bulb V/s Fan.

I have one fan shaped and several bulb shaped brushes. I do like them all, but the bulb shaped knots a bit more because the loft can be set higher on those and this is my preference.

One thing I would recommend though, is to closely communicate with OUMO prior to ordering. The chat function on their website works quite well and they will reply. I’m saying this because some of their knots are gel-tipped and it’s not specifically mentioned in the product description. You can see it however in the pictures; there will be one picture with several scales like Gel-tipping, water retention, etc.

I’m not saying that gel-tipping is bad per se, I do have one gel-tipped brush and I do like it. It’s just that you might have a preference for untreated knots.

This point is of course moot, if you are looking at a synthetic knot.

Bowl latherers tend to prefer bulb and face latherers tend to go for fan or flattop. Hybrid is somewhere in-between. I am a bowl latherer and have a preference for the bulb shape. That said, I can use any shape whatsoever without any problem. Here is an example of a bulb shape (Shavemac Ebonite):

And here is a two band fan by Rudy Vey:

Great info.

Knot shape is really a personal preference more than anything. Try them all and you will find out quickly what you like and don’t. I have many shapes (each knot maker has different versions too) and still highly prefer the basic bulb shape. Not that I can’t appreciate a good fan or even flat top, but prefer old basic bulb.
