Eczema and SLSs

After reading about how SLSs can make eczema worse, I swore them off. No more liquid soaps that contain SLSs, no shaving products with them (sorry, Proraso!), no liquid shampoo (again without SLSs). Since then (around June) I haven't had a single outbreak of eczema on my hands. Haven't gone without that since freshman year of high school. My most sincere thanks goes to everyone here for that.

And just for some scientific citation of this, click here.

True, that's actually what I started with. Post is edited! I've found that I now prefer the bars of soap and shampoo over the liquids now. Of course, YMMV.

I also use bar soap, but not shampoo bar because it's not easy to get it here (nor cheap). I would love to use some Chagrin Valley shampoo bars, but the shipping cost are way to high, so I will stick with non-SLS liquid shampoo, which I can get from iherb with a very low shipping cost.

I thought that Musgo Real made a shampoo bar? Maybe I'm mistaken.

Chagrin Valley is great stuff! Two bars have lasted me about five months- Some of the best $20 I've ever spent.

Interesting.

I think avoiding SLS helps seborrhea, as well. I had terrible seborrhea that required dandruff shampoos at least once a week and it is almost completely gone since I switched to using a shampoo bar from mystic waters soap.

Yes, because SLS strips all oils from the scalp, and in response the body overproduces oil. And then fungus start thriving, and you have the horrible dandruff.
Just by curiosity, do you know if the shampoo bar you use contains tea tree?

I swore off SLS-containing stuff a while back, and I'm very happy I did. No more itchy scalp; no more dry face skin; no more [sorry about this] mouth slime after brushing my teeth and gum irritation.

Love the SLS-free shampoo bars from Chagrin Valley (the carrot one is my favorite) and from Rose of Sharon Acres. Love the SLS-free toothpastes from Tom's of Maine, Closys, and Dr. Katz.

I've switched to SLS free shampoo for the past few months and have noticed a HUGE difference with the top of my head.

I am still having difficulties on my face but I am beginning to think I must have rosacea or some other ailment going on there, beyond eczema. DE shaving has helped a heck of a lot but I am still having some problems. Still, the top of my head clearing up has been a major relief. :thumbup1:

Dr. Bronner's is a great soap, provided it works for you and doesn't dry you out. You might want to try the sensitive version.

Kirk's Castile is a great soap as well, very light and does not have any fragrance. Not sure if it has SLS or not but I woudn't think so.

Come to think of it, I have pretty dry hair, and maybe I will look for an SLS free shampoo. Any suggestions?

This soap right here!

It does not contain tea tree, but it contains argan oil. In addition to its hair-nourishing properties, argan oil (in combination with some other oils) has actually been scientifically shown to decrease sebum production (overproduction of sebum is one of the important steps in the disease process of seborrhea).

I use SLS free face wash, shampoo and tooth paste. I don't have eczema or any other skin condition with a fancy name, but I find that SLS products are better for me.

I use the following:

Face wash: Purpose Gentle Cleansing Bar

Shampoo: Naked Naturals: Avocado and Shea Butter

Tooth Paste: Tom's of Maine - Fennel. Tom's has a specific group of pastes that are SLS free.

I think most of the Tom's toothpastes are not SLS-free.

I recently bought Burt's Bees, because it IS SLS-free.

People need to be careful with Tom's if they are buying it to get an SLS-free toothpaste; always read the ingredients list.

Same here- Only the kids' version of Tom's toothpaste is SLS free (at least the ones that I've seen).

Gah, might have to order some online! The only non-SLS Tom's I've ever seen is a kid's Cinnamon version. I abhor cinammon in most forms.

You can order both Peppermint and Fennel SLS-free from iherb.com. If it is your first purchase, you can get a $5 discount by entering the IRO586 discount code.
