durakote/cerakote questions

I am contemplating have a couple of razors done in either durakote or cerakote and am wondering what all prep I need to do? I have a reputable place to do the work with a short turnaround and decent price, but he told me that it needed to be disassembled. The razors are a British Super Speed and a Black Beauty. Do I need to disassemble and only send the parts I wan coated? I am comfortable working with small delicate parts, so I don't mind the work, its just I would like to know the entire process involved.

Thanx

I'm not sure how much luck you'll have disassembling/reassembling the super speed. The adjustable should be fairly easy, depending on the year.
What parts on the super speed are you having coated?

Well I would have the whole thing done if I'm gonna do it. Handle and all, maybe the TTO knob in a different color (not blue, red or black to avoid confusion). Much like the member who just showed a slim that was cerakoted all black.

What do want to know? how to take apart a Brit super speed and Black beauty? Didn't the reputable place tell what parts they were going to coat? I would just send them the outer shell not inside parts.

I dealt with Dave at West Coast Razors and I had a Slim Adj done in the ceracoat with no prep or disassembly required. Get in touch with him, great work and a decent price. Seriously, Dave does really fine work.

The cerakote place I am considering has never done a razor, but has done thousands of other small items. I hav used him in the past and extremely pleased with his work and he has a 10 day turnaround time too.

I will contact Dave for sure, I would like to speak wth someone who has done the work before.

I do a lot of firearms in both cerakote and durakote. I would definitely skip duracoat on a razor as it would be wayyyy too thick and probably just be a pain in the long run.

As for the cerakote, I'm sure your place will do all the prep in regards to sand blasting and removing any oils. If there's any moving parts (Tto, adjustable, etc) I would have it taken apart before coating it. If its just an old 3 piece then I wouldn't worry.

This makes me sad. Duracoat has so many exciting colors where cerakote are all tactical muted colors. I'd do a duracoat in a heartbeat if it were a good choice.

There was just a thread I read the other day on how to take apart super speeds and the different modified tools you would need. I'll do some searching.

I am interested in doing a cerakoting on an R41. Is there any info pointing to people's impression on how the coating impacted their razor? Would a new razor be a good candidate for such a finish?

I'd love to do my R41 in a 2-tone finish for fun, not restoration.

Would love to do the moly resin thermal coating I saw here: http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/got-poor-tired-razors-i-need-help-with-project.23134/ but the guy doing it has stopped offering his services for now.

As far as I can tell, the biggest impact that various coatings have on a razor is their thickness. Powder coat I guess would be too thick and not durable, dura coat is thinner, but still rather thick for assemblies, but cedrakote is only .001" or less. Very litte impact on function and much more durable than the other two.
